Buenos noches from a lonely room
« on: December 25, 2012, 05:40:07 PM »
Hello, checking in here to intro myself. Im am not a computer guy ive never joined or been on a forum before but i have been doing alot of reasearch on the cb750 and 90% has been on this site lots of good info and good people. I've had my Harley shovel generator since I was 16 and a Honda dirt bike of one kind or another since I was 8.  I recently retired from the USMC after 23 years so I've got a little more time to work on some projects. I tore down the old shovel for its 5th incarnation but just lost interest. I'm tired of the same ol stuff it's time to step out of my comfort zone and expand my horizons. I have always loved the SOHC CB750 so after a couple months of looking and researching I am now the proud owner of a 77 cb750 ( that I bought in boxes, which I always swear to never do again however,I keep doing it. I think I have a syndrome). The build starts this week. I am starting a build thread hopefully in the next few days with plenty of pics and the grand plan. I look forward to talking and working with you all. Let me close by saying I'm not a computer guy, I'm learning but don't overestimate my abilities, you are warned....

Where are you? I'm outside of Austin by Lake Travis. You don't seem com illiterate, even posted a pic on your first post!

Hi from near Toronto!

I have the 78 version CB750K which is almost identical to yours. There are many on here who have these.  You will have good help if you need it.

Good luck with your project.  You should have a great bike when you are finished.

I drove down to Austin last week and picked up the 750. It's a real clean bike only shows 8800 miles seems to be original. the kid that had it was engineer real good kid just got the bike apart and realized he was in over his head. It was running when he took it apart and it turns .  I think the exhaust is a Mac it's real nice. The seat is near perfect. I bought a 75 tank before I bought the bike. It's blue and has some nice age on it. It'll fit on this bike if my hammer is big enough. I believe that less is more. The plan for this bike will be a real lean low street fighter. I like old factory paint , but i want everything else to look new. The engine should be the jewel and all the details have to be right.
My old shovel is a 66. First year fl shovel head. The motor is visiting a good friend and getting a long over due rebuild. I sold my stock 66 fl frame and slab sides last year and been looking for a factory wishbone ever since. Thanks for the welcome.

Sorry, guess I really didn't answer 754's question. The first shovel heads were 1966 they had a generator lower end that had a kidney shaped cover on the lower ride side and a distributer they kept that motor thru 69 and in 70 went to an alt, that bottom end has a small cam cover on the lower right and looked the same thru 84. The earlier shovels are the prettiest motors Harley ever made. That pan looking lower with those shovel heads. It just don't get any better... If you are going to do a custom that is the way to go.

Such a clean look to them early shovels, a buddy has one, scored a nice L seies carb for it for very cheap last year.. They look so cool in a rigid with a short WGlide..very clean traditional look....
Just read your last post, informative..but I am quite familiar with them, sold parts and worked on them a bunch..

Steve-o I'm on lake texoma outside Denison tx bout an hour n of big d.
754 glad to know you are into old hd parts one day I'm going to come back to the shovel and I'm always needing something. I keep looking in the bottom of 12 oz bottles but usually don't find anything. I guess I'm getting duds.

I got out of parts retail long ago,but still do machine work like case boring for big bores. Got a buddy has a bunch of pans and a couple early shovels. I dont get much in parts anymore, but my buddy seems to find more than ever and hoards it.
You may run into a lot of HD. Bashing on here, but for the most part its typical "knocking what you never tried" type of stuff....
Would go into short term slavery to get my hands on a real XR750 though..
