Can't find decent fuel hose!!!
« on: July 10, 2006, 04:06:47 PM »
Ok,.. I've got a 30 year old CB550 in the garage with two fuel lines. 25 years ago the end of one line got damaged prying it off the petcock, and of course it was too short to clip the bad end off. That started a 25 year search for a fuel line that works. I've tried everything including braided and clear vinyl which gets hard and yellow real fast. I've tried automotive fuel line,.. too fat to fit between carbs. Urethane hose like everyone sells in colors,.. took longer but still got rock hard.

I even researched and found something called Tygothane and they make a hose specifically for petroleum fuels. I called the company and he assured me it didn't use plasticizers and wouldn't get hard. Its industrial stuff so I had to buy 25 feet for $75.00 Well a few years sitting in the box and it started to decompose. It looked like it was sweating and it felt real sticky so I threw it out. Ive had 10 different hoses on there, and the original one still left is in decent shape after 30 years.

Yes I tried ordering a replacement from Honda but its discontinued!!!!!!!!!!!! I got persistant and found a sheet from a dealer parts book that shows the numbering system to order bulk hoses. I put together some part numbers but the local dealer says they won't go through the computer.

Now I'm stuck looking for some newer Honda that uses a 5.5 mm ID hose 300mm or longer. Anyone know of a bike that uses a long hose, or know of something that will last more than a year or two??

1/4 inch fuel line from the auto parts store is what I've always used.  Works fine on my '71 750 as well as the '76 550.  It's slightly larger than stock, but never caused a problem.

I've got 1/4 inch line from Pep Boys on my 500 right now.

Someday I might try the fuel lines sold by Z1 Enterprises, http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=297

Dunno if that's vinyl or what.

I bought like 20 feet from the Honda dealer.  This way I know it will be a long time before I run out!  I think the dealer was around .68 cents a foot, which is a bit pricey for hose, but at least you know it's right.

Daves,..  can you tell me the name and location of the dealer? The stupid parts guys around here can't grasp the concept of "bulk" fuel line. They keep asking me for the make model and serial number. I even tried Service Honda and they didn't get it either. I even gave them part numbers for bulk hose, but their computers wouldn't accept it.

This should be a no brainer for any dealer, just buy a couple rolls for stock.???? The hose from Z1 Ent. is from motion pro and looks like clear vinyl selling for $1.00 a foot!!

Polyurethane is the best I've found so far,.. good for a few years max, then its too stiff to work with. Its also not very stretchy so the size has to be pretty close.

Thanks for the lead, I'll give Lundsford Honda a call tomorrow

Tygon Ultra Grey fuel line is the absolute best I've seen. It's available from Sudco by the foot BUT is expensive. It is great.

Hmmm,... Tygon is the correct name of the tubing I bought that decomposed in the box. Its the same stuff Sudco sells but in the yellow transparent color. Maybe the gray is different? This stuff got goey and sticky with little balls of sticky fluid all over it. This happened after about 3 years storage in a box in my basement. It smelled real funny too so I sure wasn't going to use it.

Maybe it was an old or defective batch??

I have used the yellow in the past but never really liked it. It didn't have enough wall stiffness IMO (especially when hot) and would kink or collapse if run at angles. I have a 3 ft piece I got from Pingle at least 6 years ago and it is still perfect so I can't explain why yours went bad. ??? The gray is definately different with greater wall thickness and density.

Tygon here. Best fuel line I've used. I get the yellow for $0.85/foot.
No matter what you use eventually it will harden

Maybe there was something funky in your basement that caused it to decompose?
Tygon's are pretty reputable company.
Sadly I just ordered some stock tubing from Service Honda for my 76550 and probably paid more than a dollar a foot. If you check the parts fiche from Honda4fun you'll see there are multiple parts numbers for the same tubing. Keep trying one until it doesn't show up discontinued if you want the stock tubing.

I refuse to do the math, especially after seeing this post about fuel line and what works. Next time I'll look for some Ultra Grey Tygon fuel line and have extra. Then I'll be able to experiment with routing for fuel filters and not worry about running out of hose.

Here' s a link to tygon's site with links to spec sheets about there yellow tubing

Thanks for all the great leads. I'll just have to get over my fuel line phobia. I'm ordering some ultra gray and some oem Honda line for backup ::)

FYI: If you want metric hoses and you like the look of a cloth braided line, Google for sites that sell parts for old VW Beetles.
