Can you get baffles that will fit these open pipes on my GL1100?
« on: December 04, 2012, 08:44:16 AM »
Entertaining ideas about quieting this thing down. Bike had these on it when I bought it a month ago and, while I don't necessarily mind the noise, it might get old. SO.. these are welded onto the headers. To change it I'd either have to cut the tips off or maybe go OEM? Those are 1-piece too.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Due to the fact baffles are built to go inside STRAIGHT pipes, you probably can't buy any.  If you can cut down a piece of thin (1/8) steel and bend it 90 Degrees to have a leg to attach it through the pipe with a bolt. Leave about 1/2 inch around it and it will baffle the sound SOME. TOO bad the pipes are welded!!
You can even weld a blankoff on the dump then drill a LARGE hole in the middle with smaller holes around the outside. By doing this sometimes you can TUNE the sound to what you like!!!

I mounted a pair of allmost brand new takeoffs from a Harley Road King on my GL1100 that I got at a swap meet for $20.
The first thing a lot of Harley riders do is replace the stock exhaust with aftermarket and there are quite a few avaliable cheap.
I sawed off the old rusted out mufflers and the new mufflers fit right on the pipe.
I cut the mount off the original mufflers and welded them on to the new mufflers.
Not as quiet as original Goldwing mufflers but produce a pleasing rumble.

Not so fast, they do make flexible baffles, although they may break the bank, or not come in the required size, but they do exist.
