Wanting a 4-1 or 4-2-1 for my cafe project. Any opinions on different brands, etc. and why? Or other possible options. Trying to keep the build budget low so looking for something in the $300 range.

There is budget then there is reality.

The Cycle Exchange (Wisconsin ) 4 into 2 into 1 has the best ground clearance and the exhaust allows for space to change the oil filter.
Make sure any exhaust you get does not have to be completely removed to change the oil filter!

Yeah sorry bout that, it's a 72' cb750. I spend a lot of time on Hondachopper.com where that is the only bike we talk about

In my opinion, Moto GP Werks makes the best exhaust system available, about $400

Thanks Steve-o. Ive read about him and seen a set he did in someone's build thread. I'll look into it. I can swing 4 bills. Preciate the feedback, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I had emailed motogpwerks last week and they said the price bumped up to $450 (for the 550 exhaust, not sure if the 750 is the same).

I just bought a motogp werks for my 550 and could not be happier, worth every penny. On your budget ($300) I'd say you might be constrained to mac's though. If you can swing the ~5 for motogp do it. In addition to installing one on my 550, I've heard a 750 with that pipe and it howls.

keep checking the parts-for-sale section. pipes do come up.
Its where I picked up my used kerker 4-1 from a forum member.
shipped, painted and wrapped it...all for under $200

carpy's running a holiday special, or something of the other, on his pipes. I have never bought anything from him, nor intend to until I get another bike but I have heard they were decent. You just have to have them powdered/painted/chromed yourself.

I have Mac headers - got them used from somebody here for 100 greens - with custom (by me:)) build muffler. I like the sound, she has more power than i have balls, what exactly are you looking for? Mac is cheap, but not bad.

Yeah, I was looking at the Macs. I have heard from some people that they don't like them but never really heard why. Currently, I have 4-4 that the PO cut the tips off of and welded on VW bug mufflers. This is my first cafe and no experience with sport bikes so I don't really know the differences. That's why I was asking for opinions. Is is all about the sound? The looks? Are there significant power differences?

You get no ponies from the exhaust, and if you do, there is not many of them. Hondaman mentions that in his book actually.

It is all about looks and sound - and nothing wrong with that

i bought a chrome MAC 4-1 for my 550 in March. gotta say that i love it. chrome is in great shape still, and seems to be plated pretty heavily. no rust yet, but i try my best to keep out of the rain. water spots polish off real easy, though, when it does get wet. i like the sound, and even the old-timers at vintage night have complimented me on the pipes, so there's that too

If Carpy is having a sale, I'd definitely look into one of his 4 into 1 Yosh copies. They are bare steel, but at $260 + shipping you CAN NOT go wrong.

They have removeable baffles as well. I just ordered a set myself.

Funny - His usual price for those pipes was $295 + 35 shipping..... Now it's $260 + $65 shipping for me - same difference, still a good deal.

Ok. After spending some time on Carpy's site and listening to sound bytes, I decided to go with his pipes. They look and sound bad ass and they are within my $300ish price range. Also, he had a listing on ebay for $280 + $35 shipping. So $315 total. Not a huge savings but hey, 10 bucks is 10 bucks. Thanks for all the feedback guys.

yes, they are raw. the pipes + the additional $ of ceramic coating...AND, needing to lose the center stand made me look elsewhere.

And I believe you have to remove it to change the oil filter.

OK, I had thought about a MAC 4-1 for my 78 750K as the 4-4 is shot. But, I like the "balanced" looks of the MAC 4-2. Any Pros/Cons for the 4-2 vs 4-1?

I bought the motogp werks 4 to 1 Yoshi stainless steel headers for my CB750 k4. I want to say I think I paid $499 plus shipping. Keep in mind that these are racing exhaust and are not very well muffled. They can be loud and they do require removal for a filter and oil change, but they are designed to be easily removed. They come with spigots and flanges. Allen bolts are recommended and new copper crush washers too. Neither is included.

The 4 to 1 header along with a MAC Megaphone Muffler that I had on my K4 were off a CB750A the OD of the header pipes are ~35mm. The motogp werks header pipes are ~39mm. You cannot run a center stand with these either. They are designed to fit under the motor and the muffler is bent to come out and up just behind the brake pedal pivot.

These pipes for my ears sound wonderful and are a beautiful piece of work. The stainless is very nice, the bends are perfect and the welds are perfect too. I think some carb jetting will be in order too. My bike started to run very rich after putting these pipes on.

On the performance I can say that immediately the engine ran smoother, I have better acceleration beyond the ton. But overall performance I don't know. It should be dyno tuned to really get the benefit I think.
