1978 CB400T won't start. Bummer.
« on: July 10, 2006, 05:21:42 PM »
Took a 6 hour ride yesterday, bike ran like a champ the entire time. About three hours after I got home, I went to run out to the local 7-11, and I have no spark. Nothing. Checked the plugs, no spark. Checked the fuses, they're fine.

Any ideas where to start?

After messing around for a couple hours, I noticed the main fuse is getting warm on one side when I try to crank it.

Wiring short?

Ignition switch?

Gremlins?

First, make sure the kill switch{you will have to
    seperate the switch half's on handlebar}
   isn't corroded/dirty, and all your connectors,
     fuses/holders are good ,clean and tight..
       Check connectors that go to the stator/
       regulator/fusebox,{under left side panel}
          if still nothing, it's probably the CDI...
        they crap out suddenly, especially, if they
          have gotten too hot..
                   Hope it helps

It may be the generator. Honda had a problem with the low speed circuit going bad and your decription sounds classic symptom, worked when hot and wont start when cold
Check for grounding of ignition wires from generator (I forget the colour but ignore the 3 yellow and the pale green/red trace neutral wire)
Hope it isnt the case as they are almost impossible to get hold of.

Thanks for the tips. My kill switch doesn't work, so maybe it started working.
