Freshly delivered CB750k5, sorting it out!
« on: December 07, 2012, 07:15:35 PM »
Hello from Long Beach, California, USA.  Just took delivery of my 1975 CB750.  It's not perfect by any stretch, but it's a solid bike.  First thing: I need an original-style seat!  That King & Queen seat sucks.

It's running a little thin on the early throttle, but it has been sitting for a long time.  I'm trying some fuel-system additive, we'll see how it runs in a tank or two.

The front brake is really hard to pull, and doesn't stop very well.  Looks like there's pad, but really hard to stop this thing.  Any experience in this?

I've had a couple Hondas in the past, including a CB450SC, and CB750SC (Nighthawks), but this is my first '70s machine.  I didn't have to do much wrenching on those other bikes, but I suspect that's going to change with this relic.

Looking forward to learning, and contributing what I can!  Thanks,

Greg

Welcome, Tone. Love the Planet Blue. Unless you know it's been done, a full "3000 mile tune up" would be a good idea.  When a bike has ben sitting for a long time, a good carb cleaning is necessary.  Once running properly, these bikes require little maint.
As far as your front brakes, could the caliper be stuck? If not working properly, you may want to disassemble, clean and rebuild.
Good luck

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

welcome from North Carolina. I agree the seat needs to go. Had one similar to that on my 750K6 when I go it in 2009. I bought a new one from Servicehonda.

Great tip for ServiceHonda!  Looks like they have the seat, and a lot of other parts.  I'll also check the front caliper assembly, and see what it needs.

The bike is starting to run smoother after putting some miles on it.  I'll probably take a "wait and see" approach for the carb removal and cleaning.  I just want to ride it now!

Thanks for all the welcome messages you guys.

Cheers,

You could run a little "Sea Foam" through the tank to help clean out the carbs, it will probably make a quite a bit of difference if its been sitting for a while.

Thanks for the tips, you guys!  Found an OEM seat on eBay for $77, including shipping!  I'm going to keep those links, though....good resources, for sure.

Now I have to sort out my turn signals.  Evidently somebody hacked 'em off a few years ago, then put some non-functioning replacements in.  Hope a simple re-wiring will get it done, but if not....

Where is the blinker relay mechanism located?  Is it simple to replace (or test)?

Also, I have been trying to use the "search" feature on these forums, and nothing seems to turn up in my results.  Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Greg, aka tonevault

make sure you are using the google custom search bar at the top of the site. works great for me. I haven't had to ask any dumb questions yet.......yet.

Sounds like a good plan!  Little by little, I'll get there.  Nice to meet you!

Update:  The "eBay special" seat doesn't fit.  It's very close, but doesn't quite sit correctly, and it does not include the locking mechanism, or any threaded holes to mount the seat locking mechanism.   Disappointed!  (Do you guys have any clues on how I could find the correct bike match on a part like this?)

I was able to order a Honda seat from the local shop, and they will match prices with Service Honda, which is great, because the difference was well over $100.  Waiting for that to be delivered.

Hope everybody is enjoying the Holidays!  Cheers, you guys.
