78K - Points, Clutch & Dyno Covers
« on: December 09, 2012, 10:04:20 PM »
Can anyone confirm that the points and clutch covers (and the screw layout on the alternator cover) are different on the 77 & 78s? I was thinking about getting this set for a 78K I am working on:

[simulated link to ebay billet covers here - apparently I am not allowed to post external links]

but they say that they are only compatible up to the '76. I thought they were the same.

Thanks. I'll keep practicing until they let me take my training wheels off.  I was hoping someone can answer my question without the link ?

Need to make a few more posts before I can paste the link. Easy to find on ebay. Just search for "CB750 SOHC Aluminum Finned Cover Set". They are in the Ohio (Rusty Riders). Can't find them on the RR web site though. Weird.  They are cheaper than the individual ones you can get from MotoLana in Asia. They don't appear to be billet like the MotoLana covers however. Shipping on the ML covers is crazy expensive.

Any feedback from someone who has a set would be appreciated. I'm not sold based on the pic at ebay. I want to be able to polish the entire cover and based on the pics, it looks like the area between the fins is pretty rough from the casting. Could be lots of work to polish up.

The screw layout is the same for all years. What happens sometimes is these items were packaged in 1976, hence that's the latest model year on the package. And the seller may have stripped away the original package, who knows.

I can't guarantee they will work, but if i were in the market i'd get them and know I may have to eat the return shipping. 14 day guarantee is pretty liberal.

MCRider - Thanks for confirming that for me. I'm doing a complete rebuild on the 78K and am finding that to be a common issue. Of course, they did make a lot of subtle changes on the 77s and 78s so it is taking a lot of time researching online to make sure I am getting the right parts.

Cabilao - You are spot on regarding this forum. So many forums out there are very hostile towards the new guys who post the same question that has been asked 1000 times. Doesn't seem to be the case here. The content is fantastic as well. It's great that a newcomer like myself, with this forum and a shop manual, can completely rebuild a motorcycle (including the engine).

You should see the popcorn flying when the oil question comes up.  Not hostile but good luck getting a real answer.  :)

Use the "Google custom search" to prep before asking a question. It works pretty good.

Some don't like repeat questions. But i say, assuming you do some prep work, it doesn't hurt to revisit a question, as a new answer or technique or source may have come available since the last time.

OK, so everyone has their limits, but I've spent a lot of time on tech forums (I do some software development in my spare time when I am not working on my bike) and it gets to the point where asking any question is like poking a bear with a stick.

I wish that Motolanna didn't charge so much for shipping ($40 to ship 3 covers) because I like there billet covers much better than the set on ebay. Ya, it's from Asia, but c'mon. I hate places that make money off shipping. Carpy is a good example. He wants $70 to ship an exhaust (OK its big, I get it), but then if you add some handlebars to your cart, he wants another $12. So, the handlebars won't fit in the same box? I won't give a place like that my business unless it is something that I absolutely can't get somewhere else.

Sorry for the rant, I feel better now.

I know what you are saying but sometimes shipping is based on weight as well as size, adding something else to the package can put it into a different weight category.... not saying thats the case for Carpy but it could be....  I think 40 bucks for all those covers isn't too bad....

I think also that the H in S&H is overlooked by buyers. I know when boxing up stuff i sell on ebay etc., just getting it wrapped and in the box in a proper manner can be a real PIA and time is money. I think if I were in the business that wrapping and packing would really eat up the profit margin. The H is always there with each addtl part.
