'78 CB750F Exhaust Leaks at connection to block
« on: July 07, 2006, 11:42:29 AM »
I have a 78 CB750F and am looking for some tips on fixing exhaust leaks where the pipes meet the block.  Is shimming the way to go?  thanks

There should be brass exhaust gaskets between your pipes and the block. They are probably squished beyond there usefull purpose. Replacements are available at your dealer and don't cost much.  Look with a flashlight into the holes and you should be able to see the old ones. They can be a #$%* to get out.

Good luck, hope this helps.

P.S. Make sure you have the two pieces that slip on the ends of the headers on the correct way as well. If you put them on backwards, you will not get a tight fit. :)

When you pull the pipes to replace the gaskets check out the lips on the end of each pipe.  I'm not sure how I did it, but on my last 78F I put the shims/clamp on in such a way that I actually sheared off the lip at the end of the pipe...the part that acuatlly meets the head.  I'm lucky enough to have access to a good welder, so I had him weld it back on for me.  Anyway, just be sure to check the pipes out good...

thanks for the input - I did not know anything about the gaskets. I will be looking for them and replacing them.
