Hondaman vs. '78 Shop Manual - Front axle cap nuts
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:08:53 PM »

Just finished up a front fork rebuild and found conflicting advice. The '78 CB750K Shop manual says to tighten the forward nut on the front axle caps first, then the rear. Hondaman says to tighten the rear first, then the front. Which is correct and why does it matter? My bike is a K8 if that is important.

The Honda manual is correct, because of the physics involved in how the clamp functions.

We just had a long/debated thread about this.   Are we bored?

Sorry. I used the google search before I posted and must have missed that thread. Do you know the link by chance?

You have to put the cap on the right way also.  There is a front and back.

There is a Honda bulletin about it somewhere in the thread.

I will just add that we have seen no testimonials from those being killed by assembling it the wrong way.

Certainly leaves no doubt in my mind. I suspect that the "gap front" directive given assemblers in '69 was a short-lived experiment that was quickly resolved. Pretty much everything on these bikes was an experiment in '69. I have to believe Hondaman simply didn't get the correction, or that he may have been distracted (it was the '60s, after all...)  8)
