Chef,

I know I am not alone in saying that you have admirably stretched yourself on this build.  Kudos to you for taking on so much.  Impressive!

I appreciate the support. you guys are literally the big motivation on keeping me going! I dont have anyone nearby to come and help out so without the forum here I would not be succeeding at any level ;) thanks for reading too, I may be over detailed but better more than less in my book :D

so I ordered my truing stand, runout gauge with magnetic base stand, air pressure gauge, 3 tire irons, copper adhesive gasket spray, copper anti-seize for the engine bolts, and some simichrome to try and take care of my header rust. If I can't take care of the header rust I may be pipe wrapping the headers only in black tape. its not a stock look, but the rust is just going to drive me insane, just knowing its there, even if I cant see it. I can't afford brand new pipes right now but down the road it should be a drop in replacement!

unfortunately I just got home from work and theres not enough daylight to get the engine out back and properly soda blast it. it IS all buttoned up with the covers back on and all entry holes plugged. its supposed to rain here on and off this whole week but I am really hoping to get to blast the engine so I can get it degreased again, degreased again, and degreased again. then paint, then send my engine covers off to 73nancy to be polished. I also got my gold tank stripes in! they look great, tomorrow will be one week since I painted the tank and I can feel comfortable about applying the stripes. then when the humidity permits I will clear the tank again, as well as the gauges, and possibly the frame and some other black bits. the eastwood chassis black is just not as durable as the 2k clear is, so I would rather have gloss and protection than the current status. I am positive I applied the paint right and its been curing for weeks but the "extreme chassis black" is weak sauce.

some updates. I mentioned I added new yamiya right and left hand controls. here are the old ones coming out

they work but the PO cut the wires and added extensions to fit the chopper bars that came on the bike when I got it. I know these switches could be used by somebody so I'll put them up for sale. with new proper bullet connectors and going through the contacts in the switch they would be useful for someone restoring I am sure.

ah, new flexible wires

putting the wiring through the bars. much easier with  pliable new jacket

finished

finally got my graduated cylinder, and 10w fork oil!

got the proper amount of "dry" fork oil in and got the caps on with new cap o-rings. they seem to compress fine, although I have no basis, new seals are great and nothing is leaking

I am really happy with how the ears turned out, still waiting on the fork ear top grommets to come in thursday and I can put the forks and ears on!

got my tank stripes in! one side was easy to do, and the other side fought me. end result is good. not 100% but more like 95%. I got really close with the spacing, they are equal on both sides, even if they are not positioned in the right place. looks good to me, and I am the one riding it! going to shoot clear over it soon

had to get a little teaser. still not going to use that seat though

got my rotor back too! looks good. resurfaced and drilled, the holes are chamfered too.

ready for paint!

so thats where I am. its little things right now because its still raining and I can't get the engine cleaned. also still waiting on stuff to do my wheels. patience, patience

Damn man.  You're an inspiration.  You've given me some new ideas.

Did you clear the tank and parts too, or just your helmet?

you're too kind :D I'm just a youngster fumbling around here trying to live a piece of history that I missed by a few decades ;)

I did clear all the parts. I cleared the tank with one coat before doing the decal, and the goal is to hit it with one light coat and let it dry for 45 minutes then do a heavier coat, 45 min, light coat, 45 min, and one final wet coat. no runs though!

I know my bike is a hodgepodge of stock styling but I love the K0 look. in the next week I should have a rolling frame and maybe I can finally get the engine cleaned and painted so I can get the covers off for polishing! thanks for reading

Why not polish yourself?  It takes time but getting started probably costs less than, say, your paint job.  A cheap Harbor Freight buffer, some Eastwood wheels and compound and lots of sandpaper and you're good to go.

I need another one to feed this beast! I am out of money haha. but I DID just order a new regulator and a new rectifier from oregonmotorcycleparts.com
I got bullet connectors and their crimping tool before. great folks. these are drop in units. I want as much new stuff as I can get in this thing. still have to check the stator and starter motor. those are pricey....

Stators and starters rarely fail. On that same note ... reg/rect rarely fail either. Most people replace them because of faulty diagnosis (or lack thereof) ... myself included. But the stuff from oregon motorcycle parts is top notch so that's good.

Most people's electrical problems are related to poor grounds and connections.

ah, I figured as much. I wanted to replace the cheaper easier components just because though. someone can use the stock stuff I'm sure. I finally got the beast of an engine out back for blasting today. all the oil holes plugged and used the eastwood "pre" spray to get into the gunk then soda blasted right behind it. much more effective than using one or the other. got all the clear coat off for sure and 99% of the dirt in between the fins. gave it a good rinse, and now I get to spend a couple days getting all the soda out. lots of q-tip work to come. I also sold a guitar today so had a few bucks to spend! bought all the hardware to get rear pegs in place (non existent when I got the bike), bolts for the heat shields, exhaust gaskets, front fender hardware, new HONDA brake pads, and the oil seals on the clutch cover and shifter cover. crap adds up! another $410 gone today ;)

I love love love simichrome! It's a paste red rouge. If you really want to make that chrome shine and have a high speed drill experiment on some random parts you aren't using with a green rouge and loose cotton buffing wheel. ;) brilliant finish when you get it down, just knock the loose scale off with 00 steel wool.

Dude, tank looks AMAZING!

Eastwood sells a 2K clear in a spray can these days.  So do most auto body supply places.  In fact,  The auto body supply company just up the road from my house sells a couple types of 2 part clear in the spray can. (cheaper than Eastwood and no shipping)  Only problem is once you start shooting, the shelf life is quite limited.  Who knows if the chassis black will be a suitable base for the 2K stuff though.

oh I already got some 2k clear from eastwood, as well as 66autocolor.com where I got my primer and color. I've used it and know about the shelf life, thats why I want to get it all in one shot, or two well thought out paint sessions to maximize efficiency. I'll try the clear on something stupid like the tool tray and if its good then its all getting shot.

ok finally an update. this stuff is already done but I never wrote an update with pictures

here is the engine all taped off and ready for a good cleaning with the hose and some cleaner

I need to get the motorcycle stand out to the backyard and the small stiff wheel do not like grass....so I remember something from grade school...and used this cardboard to get it out there

I got the engine soda blasted and now I am in the process of getting all the residual soda off of the engine. lots of cu-tips and solvent. patience is key here, I want my paint to stick! so in the meantime I got my truing stand in, and am finally ale to true my wheels!

the front wheel actually wasn't that off after I spoked it up, and by the time I was done with the front wheel I got the axial and radial runoff within .25mm (.0009") I am pretty happy with that

now I am working on the rear wheel and it is giving me a hard time. it was off axially by .75" !!! and radially by .25"!

hours later I have it down to .002" not good enough for me!

onto better things. I got my new badges in! just need to clear coat my tank and other black parts, get the tank bottom striping, and the tank will be done! I also got a new gas cap. mine didnt have the felt washer, and the chrome was so-so, I figured why not go all out. I will probably replace the lock mechanism as well.

I also took apart the battery sub frame with the rectifier and regulator (I have replacements coming from Oregonmotorcyceparts.

still working on the rear rim, then its time to finish the engine, and paint it.

thanks, I just read the trick about painting the bottom .5" of the left side cover black, apparently it comes from the factory like that....I really dont want to paint over this nice paint I just laid down, so I'll see how the end result looks and if its bad enough ill get some 2k black and shoot the small bit
