Wow.. turns out the solution was much more simple than I thought it was going to be. A lot less intimidating now.

tell me about it. I was too busy looking for problems at the beginning of the chain when it was clearly at the end. now to take the harness apart and wire it properly, get the coils plugged in and the pamco in and wired up! MC safety course starts tomorrow, I have taken a "class" in years. I am nervous

be slow and patient IW, check everything outside of the loom with jumpers. its not a complicated wiring system if you take out user error ;)

ok update time! its been too long

first off I got all the wiring done, once I fixed my rear right winker issue. everything works as it should EXCEPT I have not addressed the dysfunctional front brake switch. I am going to try and get a suspected air pocket out. hopefully that does the trick.

I need to torque down the front sprocket, and put the chain on, the the chain guard. I am still waiting on my oil pressure gauge adapter to come so I can button that up. I need to put on the oil tank and new(to me) hoses. then fill with oil and prime the bike.

I also need to finish wiring up the pamco (running the wires the front of the frame to meet the coils). then I need to run all the throttle, speedo, tach, and clutch cables. then fit the pipes and I suppose try to start.

I still need to get the clutch plates sorted, I am pretty positive they are glued shut

Hey man, you're doing some great and inspiring work so hang in there!

From experience, I would locktite the sprocket bolts (others feel free to correct me here).

When I was first starting, I ran into a myriad of issues. I might suggest you first try to start with the original points plate, and then install the PAMCO unit. Spark, carbs and gas, and you should be good to go. (Assuming timing and gaps are set correctly). Then, knowing shes up and kickin' I'd install the pamco unit. Just my 2 cents..

As to the clutch plates, I have no experience, but seeing that you've managed to figure everything else our with your amazing bike, I am sure you'll work that out too.

What leads you to believe the clutch plates are seized up?

pulling in my clutch does nothing. everything under the adjuster cover is put together properly. its like it isnt able to push the clutch plates in to properly operate them

Its quite common for the plates to stick together after not being used for a while, this may be your problem, have you tried putting the bike in gear and rocking it back and forth {while not running}.? is the clutch on all the time or no clutch at all.?

Did you not take the clutch apart during the rebuild? If not you might want to just to inspect everything. If you did take it all apart it sounds suspiciously like a cracked lifter plate... not saying it is but I cracked a lifter plate installing the clutch on my F3 and it did just that. Very easy to do if your not EXTREMELY careful during the install.

I have not taken it apart yet, just the adjuster plate and the clutch mechanism that twists and pushes in with the 3 balls. I have yet to put on the chain but I am going to try and rock it back and forth yes. I have read many things about that plate. mine is not broken. worst case scenario is I have to replace plates. no biggie. just another donation to the bike fund ;)

Well you should be good. Sounds like some rocking back and forth could be a fix.

well I done effed up now. I bought an RK x chain. 100 links. thats what came off the bike. peachy right? wrong. just realized because I switched to a 17t front sprocket (stock) I need a 102L chain. the front sprocket on there before sure enough was 18t. so much for me trying to do the right thing. so now do I buy a new sprocket or a new chain? ha. guess it depends if someone wants to buy the x-chain. I'll put it in the for sale forum. it will be SLIGHTLY cheaper than z1, but I cant even mount it so its freaking fresh.

Well I bought this chain probably a month or more ago. And took it out of the plastic bag to try and fit it. Don't think they will take it back. I already ordered a new one. IW from what I understand the the early k1s had a 17/48 stock gearing.

Oh I see. Didn't realize the K1 was different gearing. Not sure I'd want to gear down anymore from where I'm at (18/48 I believe). Wouldn't want the revs to be much higher on the highway.

What the heck is a benefit of an X-chain anyway?

Just list the chain over at the for sale thread, you should recover most of your money on it.

It's just RKs nicer version of an o-ring. On Z1 they have regular chains and x-chains (orings). I found it after doing some research here. Seems to get good reviews and is generally liked. I KNOW I don't need an o ring chain but I wanted to try it out because its said to be less maintenance and stretching.

good call on the locktite! got it and the sprocket torqued down. I am stubborn enough to want to use the pamco off the bat. I did have the bike running off points before I tore her down. didnt even adjust timing or gap to make it fire, although it took a lot of kicking. I cant let a little thing like ignition get in my way ;) thanks for the kind words and interest :D

Did a little reading on o-ring vs x-ring ... they are very similar.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331112

The only real difference is the little o-rings have 2 lips on them instead of just a round profile on an x-ring. Supposedly a better seal with less drag.
