update, Yolanda has daddy issues and is stripping.

about 1.5 hours in. My older brother (Hyundai auto technician) is helping me out. its easier with extra hands that work on vehicles every day not to mention its easier the second time around now that I am familiar with her.

3 hours in. done for the night. tired. tomorrow the rest will come off the frame and engine out. gotta send off the stator cover (thanks again stevo) to cycle x for chrome.

waiting for my front rim, and some parts from DSS that i cant remember (never can but its like christmas here with all sorts of packages on their way). gotta strip my "new K1" fork ears and prime/paint. so glad i had an extra can of "tuskey green" made up. going to shoot that soon too. on tuesday I am picking up a compressor and another soda blaster (buddy in ATL is borrowing mine).

picked up a K1 titled frame from user Brantley today in Charleston, SC. gotta blast, clean, and paint that up. more pics to come. thanks for reading :D

Re: Yolanda 2.0 (rear engine mounts cracked!)
« Reply #702 on: November 11, 2013, 07:56:17 PM »
Well @#$%!

was taking the front sprocket off and looked at the rear engine mounts and realized they were cracked! not just cracked, cracked and broken, some pieces taken out. guess I found where the impact vibrations wound up. are you freaking kidding me??? I was hoping to have her on the new frame in a few weeks and back on the road. my heart sank when I saw this.

in the middle of the picture below the chain is a large crack. there is a gap there too. its bad. this whole piece can rotate. not supposed to do that...

inside of the sprocket cover facing rearward. noticeable crack

other side of this mount facing forward. a missing chunk here.

how bad is this because it seems BAD. I am assuming this means new cases ie new engine. I am not prepared to transfer all of my engine parts to new cases. I would rather get ahold of a decent running engine. is this even repairable? I lost all motivation to move forward. A real kick in the balls. don't really know what to do. help!

That's tough. I would start looking for a new engine. I am sure it could be welded but how strong and how durable would it be in reality? I have no clue but I know there are those who do.  Unless you need it on the road in a few weeks, take your time. You have the new one in the stable so you can ride her until you decide how to proceed with YO.

yeah I know. not promising. I know Bill Benton has at least 8 750 engines in Atlanta, but I am not sure how many "whole" engines and if any are running. he broke down an F2 engine just for a spacer in the second gear for his race bike....last thing I want is an engine where I have to "find" the missing pieces. that is above my skill level, patience level, and time level. hoping he has a spare complete motor or something. I am off to bed, I really do not feel well :/

F#$%, that really sucks.  A used running engine is probably your best (cheapest) bet.  I would still find a local welder and see what they say.  Who knows, maybe they can fix it.  But, could they fix it without tearing the engine apart?

The replacement cases would be an option,  but then you are looking at the cost of a complete rebuild.  Your main bearings would need to be replaced as each case has different thickness bearing shells to match case and crankshaft.  And, of course, all the other parts that you might as well replace as long as it is apart.  I feel your pain, I was really bummed when I found the holes in my case.  One more obstacle to overcome.  At least if you rebuild it, you know what you have.

If you do tear it down, feel free to call anytime with questions.  I'm no expert (understatement),  but I have done it recently.

It's likely repairable but it may not be worth the cost and time. You'll almost certainly have to strip down the engine to the bare cases so they can make sure both sides of the weld are completely cleaned and prepped.

Yikes Chef. That's rough.  :(

Wow Justin,  really sorry to hear this.  Sometimes when it rains it pours.
Just don’t get discouraged,  Everything can be fixed!

The proper way to fix that is to replace the block.   But here is an idea.
Cut the broken piece off.  Then find a metal pipe that is  the approximate
outer diameter of that piece.  Cut it to the proper length.  You also may
want to shim the inside of the pipe so it fits snug on the threaded mounting
rod.  90 per cent of the rear mount is still there, so this steel pipe would
just act as a spacer. Once its all tightened up it should be pretty strong.
Its in a pretty inconspicuous place so visually would not be that
noticeable.  Crazy idea, but I just thought I would pass it on.

I'm on the hunt for a new engine. I'm hoping Bill has one in Atlanta. If not there is a guy west of Atlanta that has one. Not sure of its condition though. Very frustrating but still thankful it's the engine and not my bones.

I should be getting my rim today so I can rebuild the front wheel. Get the stator cover shipped and the new frame prepped and finished. Then just drop the new motor in.

I hadn't thought of that KC. I still want to see my replacement engine options  trying to keep positive. Always moving forward. I always have some kind of project going on :)

DANG DUDE.  :'(
Watched your build, accident, and now this. :(  sorry.
You did such a good job, i know you'll work through it.
Really consider the replacement case option. $75 is cheap.

Unless he can ship it it's a 12 hour round trip drive for me. That's $130 in gas and food. I also do not feel comfortable doing that yet. It seems so daunting. Then I have I worry about transferring the head and all the stuff I don't know how to do....I don't want to get stuck and discouraged. If I could get someone I help me transfer the engine who has done it before so I can learn and do it I would feel so much more comfortable.

tough choices, bud.
1. try to fix the mounts
2. new(unknown reliability)engine
3. new cases with internals gone thru and known to be good
all have different knowledge, costs and time commitments.
im in the process of #3 right now.  With Hondamans book, its less daunting, but $ is becoming a factor really quick  ::)

Chef, I have useless (because I don't have the matching upper cases) lower cases that could be cut up for welded repair or making spacers similar to the pipe idea.  PM me if you can use them.

my entire experience with Progressive has been pleasant and easy. I have been very surprised. the check from them is covering the repairs for sure, so its not an issue of whether I can afford another engine, its more so the anguish that comes if I decide to rebuild (although I would be coming out of pocket for a proper rebuild with all the gaskets, chains, tensioners, honing, maybe rings etc.)

thats why first i am looking for a running engine to drop in and then rebuild the original one. that was the plan RIGHT before the accident actually....rebuild another engine and drop it in in the spring. guess thats happening much sooner ;)
