I like the wheels, good job on building them.  Nice save on the muffler guards.  You sure have made a ton of progress lately!  My progress will come to a halt on Saturday when I leave for work til the end of the month.

thanks Ed. I also got some more goodies, like new brake shoes, and a bunch of cotter pins, so I got the new shoes in. then I got my circlip pliers and was able to get the forks apart. super messy in there. after a lot of cleaning I painted the fork lowers and am baking them now. I have new copper washers for the 8mm allen bolts on the way, and can't wait to get new oil in the forks and get them on the bike!

Nice work chef. Just take it slow and steady and you`ll be fine. I agree with leaving the patch work alone but if you can see inside the case it will leak. High temp JB Weld will work fine........Gary

CycleX also has a bolt kit which I picked up from them. I'm not sure but the fasteners may be some grade of high strength aluminum.

ok, finally got some stuff worth updating! I bought the stainless kits from that link you posted Gary, both the front end bolts and the engine bolts. they should be here at the end of the week! I also got my forks cleaned completely and new seals in, just waiting on my fork oil and graduated cylinder so I can put the right amount in. I am going to use the original springs but progressives may be in my future. I figure that's an easy swap if the time comes.

I also re-patched up the sprocket section that was patched up. I got my rear sprocket off and I did tear the existing jb weld up a little bit. I put some fresh jb weld on, and tomorrow when its cured I'll put a little more spread out for good measure, overkill is underrated.

in other news I received my paints from 66autocolor.com they use the spraymax cans with the 2k paint. fantastic stuff that people like me can use at home, and get near pro automotive results.
First I will say that these are some of the most helpful folks on the planet. the best customer service I've ever dealt with. found them through searching here, and member whiteorbs uses them a lot, so I wanted to have a go. after about two weeks of staring at color codes and then sending them a sample from a nail polish I found, they sent me 3 cans of color. I also bought adhesion promoter for the plastic bits, then a high filler primer for the plastic, and an epoxy primer for the fork ears and tank. I also got 3 cans of 2k clear.

I spent a few days prepping and prepping and prepping. today I was able to get out in the garage and paint! I went with the closest to Honda blue green I could get without dropping serious coin for the real deal, and ungodly amounts for a pro painter. pictures are uploading, they'll be up soon!

here are some pictures! I started taking the head cover off.













things seem to look good. surprisingly clean.





here is how the motor sits now. I got my gaskets in from cyclex. going to put them on with the covers and old bolts, soda blast, clean, degrease, degrease, degrease, and paint. then take the old bolts out and put my new allen bolts when they get here. I want to have the clutch cover, stator cover, shifter cover, and sprocket cover polished but a going to paint the head cover.

finally bought a multimeter!



new shoes and springs. now that the brake arm that moves the shoes isnt crusted shut, it works fantastic!





forks





new crush washers



put the allen bolts in the bottom of the forks to the damper inside. torqued it to 14ft/lbs. found that info here on the site. someone referred to a newer manual on a newer bike and if its the same item and concept it should be tightened the same. works for me



cut slots in an 8mm socket so I could hold the end of the damper still while I tightened the allen bolt, then when it was snug I was able to torque it down without the modified socket.



here was another fun project. the rear sprocket hub bearing retainer gave me a lot of trouble. I bought a new retainer to try and have fresh grooves etc. long story short I'm pretty sure I cross-threaded the new retainer into the hub and got it about halfway in before I realized it. I bought an adjustable pin spanner that worked out wonderfully. well I get to this moment, and try to back the retainer out, and nothing moved. this was by far the most physically strenuous thing I've done. I had to put the hub in the rim, and have my dad turn the wheel as I slowly backed the retainer out. took about 20 minutes of pure muscle power. the bottom half of the threads were still good in the hub, but my new retainer was toast. $30 down the drain. ended up using the old retainer and it worked like a charm (who knew) just re punched 4 new holes and I was good to go.

also new master cylinder from DSS. add to that a new caliper piston cap and my braking system is %90 brand new. exciting!



started stripping the tank. used klean strip. took a few coats. DO NOT get this on you. I already knew that, but in case you didnt, now you do.









in other news I got my swingarm finished with new phelonic washers and got that mounted up as well as the rear shocks.





bought a new headlight bucket from DSS, it was only $30 so I figured why not.



I wanted to do matching paint stripes on my helmet, these green ones won't do!





I got some parts primed!







now its time to paint! first I had to heat the garage up, and I don't have a space heater, but I DO have two hair dryers. left those on hi for an hour and the garage was a toasty 75+ degrees. perfect. now its time to plastic the room up!

I forgot to mention I did some bondo work on the few dents there. nasty stuff that is, first time working with it. pretty easy and straightforward to use though

also got some goodies in from yamiya. new switch housings. I don't think there is anything wrong with mine, I just wanted new one with new wires etc. I'm pretty sure I'll be putting mine up. I also got tach and speedo wire harnesses. new with new pliable wiring. 8 new bulbs. speedo rubber ring (the other one is coming from hondabike.com). fork ear bottom rubber grommets, acorn nuts, press in zerk fittings, and fork cap rubber seals. I have more goodies coming in from hondabike.com in the next week.

so next steps are to get my jb weld sprocket area finished, bolt on engine covers, soda blast and clean and degrease the crap out of it. then tape off the covers I'm getting polished by nancy73 and paint the engine.

I still need to get the wheels trued, tires mounted and balanced. my front rotor was shipped out today and I want to get this frame rolling. when the wheels are trued should there be an hub covers or dampers on? or should it just be the bare hub and axle?

thanks Nick! year thats the spraymax 2k cans. overall it was a fairly easy process but man that paint IS NASTY. I would loved to do this outside but it was below proper temperatures to paint. I don't know that I want to go through this process again anytime soon. I am very meticulous though so things have to be perfect and set up just right. when I paint my guitars with nitro paint its the same way, but that paint is just a little more forgiving because each layer chemically burns into the last. also this 2k stuff is brutal on the body. don't even THINK about doing this without the paint suit/respirator combo. in retrospect I would love a full face mask next time. so my eyeballs aren't exposed.

thanks guys. I know it isn't exactly Honda candy blue green but it is very close. if anyone wants the paint code let me know, they mixed a special one for me called "Tuskey Green" and at $20 a can (two cans of color did all of this) you can't beat the price.

thanks Gary! I still have a bit to go, but I'm glad the paint is out of the way. I don't want it to be the last thing holding me back from riding because I might have ridden it as it ;) paint is also one of more confident skills I have. really pleased with these can results. just have to clearcoat the tank again when my gold stripes come in.

I`m not so sure that trapping vinyl stripes under clear coat is the way to go. Plastic and paint expand and contract at different rates. I`ve been in the collision business and around paint and body work all my life and I would not paint over any type of plastic or vinyl stripes. The only way I would clear over the stripes is if they were painted with the same type of paint. Just this poor southern boys humble opinion......Gary

From my understanding the decals were cleared from the factory and I'll be using the same clear over the stripes that's on the tank now. 2k high gloss clear. It's also recommended by the company that makes the decals I bought. I guess I'll take my chances with it, but I think it will be ok.

So now that you have your bike firing when is it gonna be zipping around?? In anxious to see all these builds finished

I know its too late now but a little tip when using paint stripper, instead of using a scraper or similar to get the soft paint off, use your scraper to get the bulk of it off then  try using some stainless steel wool, it takes every last bit of paint off easily, no fiddly scraping at all, oh, use gloves when doing this.... ;)

Good to hear Ed, can't wait to see you get back on it! Retro, thanks for the tip. I'm sure it will come in handy some day, it did take a good while to get all the old paint off.

Iron, I'm not going to tear into it. I may be taking a risk, and in a few months I may be tearing into it, hopefully not though. I just don't feel enough confidence to even take one thing apart on the motor right now. If I have to then I have to. It ran and it didn't leak one drop of oil before, so with any luck the most ill have to deal with are some new weeps from the new gaskets.

Great painting. That color looks sick ! will be interesting to see the final assembly and how it plays together !

Probably you know this by now but Be careful when painting your helmet though, most helmets is a big NO NO to paint since the paint destroys the mechanical properties of the outer material ! Love the helmet !

Thanks for the compliment viktor I am excited to see it come together. I did NOT know that about helmets and now you've worried me that I've destroyed the viability of the helmet itself. How do they get painted in the first place if paint is not safe for them?
