That engine came out great. The VHT seems to have a bit more shine than the Duplicolor but they are very similar shades. I'm thinking of doing a similar thing and converting my parts washer into an oven with some insulation so I can bake my top end. lol

You're moving right along now. Glad to see everything coming back together for you.

Your decision to personally paint everything as far as this bike has me really rethinking how to have my bikes painted. What you've done looks so well done I have a hard time believing it comes out of a rattlecan.

Looks great Chef, really like the color.  The 2K clear is great paint.  I did my CL360 in it last year, even wet sanded and buffed.

I sure am hoping so Ed! I got the engine (75F) in the new K1 frame and got my "new" front end assembled. put a shifter on and tried to put it in gear. nothing either way, and that was with me moving the sprocket. well crap. so I popped the tranny cover and the whole shift linkage above the shift drum is missing. wow. guess it was rummaged for a few parts while it sat for so long. good thing I now have a "spare" engine. I will be taking that off the K1 engine tonight and hopefully getting it in place. last time I messed with the linkage I spent a few hours trying to get the springs loaded correctly, it was a nightmare.

I plan to get that in place tonight, then get the oil tank/hoses, wiring harness, coils/plug wires, ignition, fender, chain guard, and rear wheel on. whew. as long as I get this shift linkage done I don't forsee anything too crazy. just hoping the engine fires up and doesnt leak or smoke. crossing fingers!

in other news, I GOT the cb450 in massachusetts I was looking at, it was picked up last night and will be here in a few days. very excited about it, i will be starting another project thread in the other bikes section. anyone 450 savy chime in, I don't know anything about them

another update. ups and downs of rebuilding. the holiday season always makes it difficult to dedicate any time to the bikes. working 60 hour weeks sucks, but, whatever.

I finally got the old front end off the old frame....thos bent forks were fun. trying to get all of the little pins and spacers off a bent fork...yeah. got all those little pieces on the new fork, new seals and into the 'new' lowers. got those mounted up to the front end. something odd though. when putting in the all balls tapered bearing kit, I found out that the top bearing was too tall creating a gap at my fork ears. I used the same bottom spacer as on my other triple so I could verify, it would appear this kit has different bearings. the old ones say KML on them and the new ones say ALL BALLS on them. odd. I was able to just use the top bearing from my old triple, and add the seal/washer on top of the stack under the stem spanning nut. in the end it worked out but its a good thing I already had that bearing from before or I would have been scratching my head. it all lines up fine on the bottom too.

here are the forks...well there's your problem

My buddy (only other guy in Savannah with a 750 I believe) came over and helped me get the 75F 'new' engine into the 'new' frame. my two rear mounting bolts were slightly cocked but they went in fine. layed the motor down and put the frame on. minimal damage and not too much fuss.

front end on with new correct fork ears....so pretty :)

threw a shift lever on there to test the gears and nothing. up or down, moving the sprocket. it returned to center, but would not shift. I call Bill Benton, who I bought the motor from (it was a friends of his, higher mileage, pulled to put a new motor in and this one just sat indoors for awhile), and ask if he had any thoughts. he said open it up. so I popped off the tranny cover and this is what I saw

the whole shift linkage was missing! kinda irritated me, but also kinda cracked me up "well THERE's your problem!". so I transplanted it from the other engine now that I have a parts engine ;)
I remember from last time how difficult it was to get that last spring thats flush against the crankcase on there. I am fumbling with it for a good 15 minutes and my brother walks in, sits down and takes the spring and tab and gently sets it perfectly in place on his first try. I just about knocked him out for being a twit ;)  he held it in place while I put all the assembly on that long bolt and got it finished up, shifting just fine. don't mind the drum bolt....I errr....thought I should take it off and realized it wasn't coming off by natural means, so before I got medieval on it with cutting tools and drill I had some sense talked into me about LEAVING IT ALONE. funny I just read through edwardmorris's thread and he did NOT leave it alone and had it snap. glad I walked away from it. now it looks mangled but it is solid as a rock.

that brings up the next issue I faced. I was getting in gears but was able to spin the final shaft/sprocket by hand in all gears. that doesn't seem right from what I remember. called Bill again and he suggested making sure the clutch adjustment was set fine with the locknut etc. did that and nothing. he said to pop the cover, so I did. nothing looked out of the ordinary. I spent very little time behind the clutch cover the first time so I am not familiar with it. I popped the clutch cover on the original engine. looked the same. I could spin the whole clutch basket on the new engine though and not on the first engine....hmmm....then it hit me. I took ONE look closer and realized there were no %@#!ing clutch plates in the new engine! wow.

for those wondering there ARE pistons in the engine I promise. so it was time to do something new, take out the old clutch and put it in the new engine. thats exactly what I did. I marked the lifter plate and the clutch housing so it went back together the same way. while it was apart my brother and I spent 10 minutes staring at the lifter plate and concluded there is no proper orientation. that puppy is perfectly symmetrical. I think the problem is when the plates dont line up perfectly inside the hub and create a tiny gap which translates back to the spring putting extra pressure and snapping a corner. I tapped on the bolts as I tightened and just near the end I received a huge smack and the plates lined themselves up. no cracks, no sweat. cover went back on and the sprocket cannot be turned by hand. success I believe.

got more things on like the oil tank, battery box, and tool tray. then came the chain guard, shocks, and rear wheel. had a little fuss with the drum brake but its all sorted now and braking properly. I need to steal back my oregon motorcycle parts rectifier and regulator off of fiona to put back on yolanda. same thing with the shorty shocks. these stock ones are just for mock up, I can barely get my toes on the ground with them!

tonight I will be getting the pamco/coils, and wiring harness off the other frame and hopefully onto here. going with black spark plug wire instead of the yellow. maybe tonight I'll even be able to test fire ;) if not that's ok. I start vacation on the 1st....best way to start the new year. I am calling it Bikecation 2014! should be receiving the cb450 during that time as well. exciting stuff, ready for my 78F to go under the knife

thanks guys! encouragement means the world! I am on day 2 of my vacation and almost done! I got all of the wiring transferred, and ordered another rectifier and regulator from oregon motorcycle parts to put on the 78F since I stole them back for Yolanda. the neutral light was out so I checked the ground against the engine case and it lit up, must be the neutral switch. get the switch out and the ball that springs up and down to make contact to pass current has sunken in. there was no spring in there or something. it didnt look like the switch was serviceable so I am not even sure how it happened...I took the neutral switch off the k1 motor and popped it in and all is well.

fit all the rats nest inside the headlight bucket and buttoned her up. added a new horn just a cheap one but its MUCH louder than the old one).

proceeded to get the brake line in place. it still feels like I have weaker brakes than before though. the lever is not as stiff as my 78F that's for sure. gonna work on that. before I put the carb bank on I checked all the jets to make sure they were clear. all is well, I did a good job of draining them when I removed them. they went on with a little bit of fuss but not too bad. then the airbox top and bottom. then came a little trouble. throttle cables.

they are fairly new (what 5 months old?) OEM and when I got them in place the slides were not snapping shut. it wasnt the carbs because I checked that already. it was as if the pull cable was too tight but there was no more slack to give. when I removed the push cable it worked fine...hmmm. well after a lot of poking around I remembered my right hand grip was pushed in during the wreck. I use oury grips and they are very sticky. apparently it had gooed up the inside of the handle control where the throttle sleeve meets and very soft rubber was gunked inside causing drag. I got all of that out and everything is back to normal. no crazy adjustments on the cables needed! so the moral here is do not discount any grip drag if your throttle is sticking

pamco and coils are in place. not sure if I have them to the right coil but if it wont fire I just need to switch two plugs at the coil to see

I dropped some oil in there and the right side pipes are on. finishing cleaning the left two pipes and they are going on. then gonna get some gas in the tank and try to fire! its been raining for the last 36 hours straight and is supposed to go all night so I am not going to ride, but it sure won't stop me from giving Yolanda some new breath. thanks for reading
