My 1975 Honda CB400F
« on: November 25, 2012, 06:55:13 AM »
Just purchased on 24 Nov 12 with a nice custom seat pan, fairing, clubman bars and awesome paint.  Engine needs improvement.  Next mods I have in mind are the exhaust system, replacement of center stand with a kick stand, replacement/upgrade of gauges, and some cosmetic detailing.

Welcome and nice bike.  Whatbimprovements does the engine need?
If you don't know the history, a "3000 mile tune up" may be in order.

The engine runs a little rough - will not hold an idle at stop lights.  She starts right up and you have to get off the choke real quick - makes me think it's running rich?  Previous owner said he replaced seals and gaskets.  I am looking for carb rebuild kits and will probably tackle this during the winter months.  It has over 27K indicated but I don't know the accuracy of the odometer.  I will start with some basic maintenance to ensure she is protected.

I really enjoy the forums and the vast amount of information, ideas and assistance they offer, thanks.

Some engines don't need choke unless super cold.  Adjust idle when fully warmed up, I like mine a little high around 1500 rpm.

Looks good.  The pods probably don't have anything to do with the idling/performance isse :P :-\.    Had the bike been sitting?  If so, the carbs will need to come apart as most all 400 fours clog up in the midrange/emulsifier jets after sitting for an extended period of time .  3000 mile service as mentioned and enjoy the ride.   And welcome...Larry

Thanks to all for the comments and welcomings.  I have decided to switch out the frame (the kickstand lug was removed from the current frame) and while transferring everything rebuild the engine and carburetors.  I already purchased a MAC 4-1 black exhaust system, and it sure sounds a lot better.  While the bike is down I want to totally go for a "bumble bee" approach - everything that is not yellow at this time will get powder coated a matte black. I am also going to add front and rear turn signals to make the bike more street friendly.

I am having a hard time finding a engine rebuild gasket set for this bike - any suggestions out there?  I scour eBay, Craigslist and get Google and Bing to overheat searching for a source...

Thanks for any and all assistance

Merry Christmas!
