Plastic seat tray
« on: December 17, 2012, 04:00:21 PM »
So I've been looking at the bottom side of snowmobile seats and dirt bike seats and they all seem to be made out of some kind of plastic that can be heat molded to shape , foamed and then have the seat cover stapled right to it without shattering, does anyone know what type of plastic this is and where to get it? I'm looking to make a custom seat for a project or two and the metal pans  are already so bent up for fender contours that it's just a PITA to deal with if you wanted to shorten them, then you can't staple a cover on it. I've spent hours on a sewing machine altering covers and still unhappy with the results. You know what I mean? I'm hoping to lay a sheet over a finished bike minus the seat and heat it to the contour of the bike so it fits and mounts properly and can be shaped to individual likes.
Fiberglass is so messy any I hate the smell, then you either end up gluing or riveting a cover to it. I have a riveted cafe seat on one machine, too skinny, hate the rivets and the uneven cover pull, not comfortable or attractive and they usually don't mount nicely. I think we can do better than this. Anyone have knowledge of these plastics?

I think Frankenstuff is working on something like that.

I think that I found a material to use that is readily available, solid enough to hold the weight, semi mold able, I haven't tried to shoot a staple in it yet, but it's looking promising .I just put it on my other thread in projects under 80 pd's vs 81vb's carbs.
