I got one from these guys just in case someone else wants to try them out. I don't have a pic of it but looked good. Just need to put it on. I'll take a pic if anyone wants to see it. Pretty reasonable too.

Did they stamp the VIN number on for you?  And if they did, did they require the old one, or will they stamp
any VIN you want?

They put the number on there for me. I told them my VIN and they did it. I suppose they'd put any number on there you'd like.

Dude, google images..... :) they weren't stamped originally and be sure to fake the drive screws if you don't want anyone to notice.  I am in indiana, just use my stamp set to match the title.

The VIN number was Stamped on from the rear.  Look at the picture I posted.  You can just barley see a little
rectangle around each number from the stamp.  If you run your finger over it you can feel that the VIN number
is sightly raised.  The rest of the lettering looks like it was painted on.

Ask and you shall receive.

It is a metal plate and the numbers are engraved into it NOT stamped. It's not a sticker on top, but I don't know what it is? Kinda like a silk screen or something. I scratched on it a little bit at the edge and on the top w/ my finger nail and it seems pretty solid. Let me know if you have any other questions on it.

I don't recall. I've had many a night w/ lots of drinks since I got it from them. I want to say that is the only plate that they offered at the time, but I may be wrong.

Guys, the 1972 and later has a new and different style VIN label, now with the weight shown.

Here’s the difference:

I removed mine to powdercoat. Or I should say I had the shop remove it. Really mangled it, though intact. I used a 2" piece of PVC as a mold, heated it and tapped it with a hammer to reestablish a curve. Taped the face so the hammer blows wouldn't mar it. Then dropped the diameter of the PVC a little. You wnat the curve to be a little more severe than the fork neck. That way when the new rivets draw it down there won't be any edges sticking up. I also used a light adhesive which squished out all four sides and wiped clean.

I think you are correct. Just looked at a few of mine with a magnifying glass and your picture and description are right on. I would bet money if you take one off you will see the stamp indents on the back side. Don't have any I want to pull off right to prove it, but pretty sure you are correct.

Mine was off when I powder coated the frame and yes you can see the indents on the back side where the VIN number is stamped.

I am having a similar problem with my 1977 CB400F. The powder coater removed the vin plate and lost it. I have the title and paper work with the right numbers. Does anyone have a hi res photo and or measurements of a late 400F VIN plate?

I too get to undertake replacing my VIN Plate. The only problem, I cant find where the rivets go into the neck. Looking at the bike, there are 2 little rust spots on the neck, I can only assume these are the remnants of the rivets after being ground off?Maybe my bike was repainted in the past? Does anyone know the best way to drill out these old rivets?

My concerns are introducing metal shavings into the inside of the neck and into the steering stem ball bearings and what size to drill bit to use.
Ill post a pic later.

I used #2 round head u drive screws to replace my rivets when I had my frame powder coated.  I also used a bit of carpet tape on the back of the plate to hold it in place.

They call for a #44 drill.  If you can't drill out the existing rivets you could install new ones - just offset them slightly.  Just be sure to punch a divot in the metal to keep the drill from walking.

IIRC the holes don't go through.  I've had to do this for a few projects though- might be confused.

BTW, if you need replacement drive screws, I've got about 90 left.  Let me know and I can send a couple your way.

How thick is the frame metal at the neck? How far in do they go?
