new tubing bender bending .058 wall
« on: December 16, 2012, 08:22:37 PM »
I've been working on this for my racecar project. Wondering what I can build for my bike. Right now I have an 1 1/4" od tubing die set on the way.  Will bend .065 and thicker. I might try 16 ga exhaust at some point.

Not shown, base and hydraulic cylinder.

The instant I get my hands on one, should be in the next few months..I should have access to one..
...I have to start on the dies to bend up some highpipe parts..

This resembles a #2 hossfeld, except for the hydraulic and brackets. I borrowed a #1 to build it with. It bent the 1/2"x 3 1/2" bar stock easy. I'm buying the tooling from Hossfeld, American bender looks to be the same design.

That looks interesting Don, will it do nice wrinkle-free tube bends? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yes it needs .065" or heavier though. I'm thinking that's around 15 gauge. I forget the MM. They use the same one at RJ race cars our local NHRA and ADRL pro stock/pro mod builder. There are dies available to do almost any metal work.  Even a punch and a shear. Williams low buck tools sells one,  American Bender and the Original Hossfeld.  I cheaped out and built my own.
JD2 has a different design bender that's less expensive, my experience has been on one of these.
With the hydraulic, any of them will bend 2" x 1/4" wall.

Looks great mate, what are you going to use it for mainly? I think our headers are either 1 1/2" or 1 3/4"? Can you buy those size dies, and are they expensive? I'd love to make my own pipes! Cheers, Terry.  ;D

I'm building it to bend the tubing to backhalf the dragster. I had a chassis shop add a swingarm/coil overs suspension few years ago and the builder made some poor choices which led to cracks this year. It's been parked since june.
The changes I decided to make are coincidentally in the new SFI chassis spec. rule book. Guess I'm not the only one to see this same problem.
I just bought the 1 1/4" die so far, it's about  $250.  Hossfeld sells dies for bending almost any metal you can get. flat, angle square etc. I've seen guys buy the next size die up, then bend a tube, slice it to make a shoe to shim the die for the next size smaller tube. We  use a lot of .058" wall because it slip fits into the next size

I'm hoping my buddy that works at the race car shop can provide some short pieces to practice bend, the part in the die is the upright for the chassis so I haven't bent any tube yet. I'm picking up my order today.

It appears the blueprint is incorrect, the 1 1/4" wont bend properly. The pins shouldgo in the 5th holes and tube wont load. According to someone that owns one the c-c should be 5 5/8" but it's 5 3/8". I don't know if the spacing of the holes are off or just the starting point. Anyone want to start drinking in the afternoon?

That's slick too, I wonder how it re-sets to bend it farther?  I hadn't seen the video, that's the JD2 bender If I hadn't been given the steel and found the print I would have bought one of these.

That looks like pretty thick walled tubing guys, will one of those benders do exhaust tube without wrinkles? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yrp. the blueprint was wrong. Story of my life. I knew it was a leap of faith to use it. It looked so well drawn I trusted it. The holes should be 1.1" apart which makes them .035 short x each hole adds up to around 1/4" at the 5th hole. Idropped 5/8" pins in instead of the 3/4" and it falls into place. Might get this project bent before I weld it back up and start over. Next time it goes in a mill to make the holes.

I used 5/8" pins instead of the 3/4". that allowed for the difference in the drilled holes. The 1 1/4" bent perfectly. Now my camera phone is on the fritz. pictures when I can.

The #5 hole is off 1/4" so I made 5/8" pins to replace the 3/4" ones to temporairly make it work. 1/8 two times = 1/4"
 This is 1 1/4" .058 chrome moly.

Is it just my eyes, or just a trick of the light, but that doesn't look like a smooth, uniform bend Don?  :-\

It's the light, my picky friend that builds NHRA pro stocks and pro mods approved of the bends. I sprayed oil all over everything and it's an old piece of tube shiney here and there.

Here are the blueprints I used.  Be warned, on the main frame and the swinging frame the c-c distance between the holes is incorrect. It shows 1 1/16" it is really closer to 1.1" From the center pin to the #5  25/32 hole should be 6 5/8" the print adds up to 6 3/8"
Who knows what else might be incorrect. Repeated attempts to contact him have failed.
