Question about Lesters
« on: December 17, 2012, 10:13:29 AM »
I know this has been beaten into the ground but i'm having trouble searching my answer.

Q: how much is a set of Lesters worth on average?   are there any problems associated with them?

I think i also remember something about the 16" rear being undesirable.  just looking for info, pros/cons.

if anyone thinks that's robbery, please holler.

$300.00 for a set is a good price even for the 16" rear however if it's a 18" rear (drum or disk) offer $350.00 and you'll still be ahead close to $600.00

Check in the FAQ for Lester wheel numbers. 300 is good deal consider a set of spokes would cost you that much.   As far as market value goes, depending on lots of factors.

OK that's good info.  i wondered why some sets are +$600 and some seem to go for less.  i hope it's an 18-incher.  i already have an 18" rear (chrome, spoked) for it, and i dunno if i want to downsize.

thanks guys.  this is all good info. :)

Ended up getting a titled 77 750K frame with a set of what I think are Lesters ( 19" and 18" rear ) for $300 - front has some dual-disc rotor setup.  Must have 550 shocks.  Oh well.  Good deal I think.  Rims seemed undamaged - I went over them pretty closely.  Didn't see any Lester logos, but apparently they aren't always there.  I just hope they aren't Kawasakis...  either way its a good set of rims.

Look in the drum brake area on the rear rim, that's where mine is branded.

Igot a set for 125, or less that were mentioned on here. Personally I would not pay over 350,unless to resell. They. Often bring crazy money..
In my opinion they should be worth far less than Morris, however. The Lester rear is an actual bolt on.

my logic is that i'd spend around $350 for a set of chrome spoked wheels in "new" condition.  mags are easily restored if they aren't cracked or bent, and i like them because it's just something different. :)  my 550's got spokes - i'd like my bikes to not all be clones i guess.

OK what i really want to happen is for them to all look different enough for my friends to say "CHEESUS, MAN!  HOW MANY F***IN' BIKES DO YOU HAVE ?!?!" hahaha.

What do you mean by "bolt-on" ?   I are confused.

I mean it goes on using your brake/sprocket hardware. The. Morris requires rear disc conversion on drum brake models, whick also means mounting a mc, etc..

ohhhhh.. ok.   :)   gotcha.   yes, that's a good thing.

I saw that you commented on this thread about dual-disc front wheels - http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=55612.0 - so i take it that the PO didn't necessarily do a terrible hack-job to get the 2 front discs (6-bolt) on the front wheel?

The Lester marks are on the inside of the hub, if I recall correctly. The wheel needs to be removed and the brake removed from the wheel.
