'80, '81, '82, '83 CB650 (cleaned up and rebuilt)
« on: December 17, 2012, 08:45:29 PM »
Okay, I'm still figuring out how this forum works but here is my build idea. Right now, it is VERY slowly coming together, but hopefully I'll get there!

So, the bike I'm starting with is my 1980 CB650 STD. Got her from a guy near Pitt. for $200 last spring. Sat since her last inspection in '92 first in a barn, then a garage. I brought her home, cleaned her up, serviced everything, got her running all in the span of about 4 days. The spoke rims were junk, tires were rotted (though still held air), fork seals leaked, front brakes were seized, carbs were junk, and probably a few more things. Local guy had most of the stuff I needed--so I thought anyway. They were all from an '82 SC. I, ignorant of CB's in general, eagerly bought the CV carbs, rear Comstar, and a couple of other little things for spares (turn signals, gauges, shocks). Being that I had to use this bike to get to and from work, I was too short on time and $ to fix my spacing error; so I got to rigging. Carbs were mounted via ribbed coolant hose and hose clamps  :-[ but it worked! Had to buy the air box manifold from an '82 but everything jived pretty well. Bought new tires, put the rear on the new Comstar. At this point, I was making it to and from work (on a dry rotted, bent front spoke wheel though). Then it happened... I saw the '83 rims and I had to have them!! Soo... I purchased a front and rear, and a set of air assist forks from an '81 Custom (for the dual brakes mostly). Put on the new forks with seals, shimmed in the new front wheel... uh-oh! '83 was shaft drive! The rear wouldn't work! :'( Long story short, she served her purpose well but I rode her to death and even laid her down a couple times... so now she sits in my garage, oil leaking out of every gasket and seal and the #4 rod bearing clattering nicely... TIME FOR A BUILD!!! And I wanna do her right. I've beaten on her enough, now she deserves better...

So, this is what I now have:
1980 Cb650:
-'81 Front forks and dual piston calipers
-'82 CV carbs, rear wheel, airbox, and rear shocks  -also have a black crankcase from '82 as well
-'83 Front wheel

I also added a Shoei FM-2 fairing, drag bars, black mirrors, and black NOS case savers.

My plan:
-retain every bit of the red-headed stepchild that the 650 is. Use the same frame, same family of parts, etc. just like I have been doing. No 650 on a 550 swap or anything.
-Bore the engine to 62mm (to avoid re-sleeving) and stuff either KZ650 pistons or CB750 pistons in (would rather have the 650 pistons though--same cc family  8) )

Here is where I need the help though. I want a much hotter cam, heavier springs, lighter retainers, port 'n polish job, the works. But I want to do as much of it myself as possible and the rest as cheaply as possible. I have an extensive mechanical background but I don't know the details of these machines yet like what swaps, where to get stuff, etc. For instance, will 550 valve springs work in the 650? How about the connecting rods? Can I put some side drafts on the 650, same as anyone would the 750? I know the head spacing is the same between the earlier 750s and the '79/'80 650. What is a good cam setup? I'd like to increase the compression ratio and I don't mind using octane booster. I'm looking for a good mid range torque curve with nice top end as well. Provides a racing edge while maintaining streetability.

As far as looks go, I'm thinking a sorta cafe meets streetfighter but still old school.

So am I crazy? Admonish me please!! Am I stupidly and rashly in over my head??? Don't hold back ;D

Go hard Nate, i have about 10 Grand in one bike {CB750K2} and its still in boxes   :o  Not to mention the other 2, if it makes you feel any better one has a 900 kit, the F model has a 970 Kit and the money pit is a {or will be} fuel injected 1000cc beast with a billet aluminum block with Nikasil bores.... ;D :o

Feelin better.... ;D ;)

That's crazy!!! I love it :D And thanks for the encouragement; I'll definitely stick with it. Won't be as awesome as your beasts there, but I'm only looking to put local Harley owners in there place... which I have already done a few times stock ;) --that and a buddy of mine who has a Kaw Vulcan 1300... he wasn't very thrilled, but he quit talking crap about my "30 year old piece of Honda junk" ::) Keepin' the SOHC alive here in Western Pennsylvania.

So, yes, I am feeling better already 8)

The 650's hold their own quite well ;).  I was going down the highway on my '79 650 a while back, sitting on 100kph and I had a Harley pull up and just sit beside me, I looked over and he blipped the throttle a couple of times and gave me a silly grin.  I just clicked mine back to 4th and opened it up.  At the same time, I heard the tractor load up as he gave it the beans.  All I saw in the mirror was his headlight getting smaller.  I backed off when I got to the North side of 160kph because I knew just around the corner the cops liked to hide with the radar gun.  As I was slowing down the Harley blasted past me and rounded the corner, I made sure I was back to the speed limit before I rounded the corner. Then I rode past the Harley rider while he was getting pulled up. ;D

Nice :D I've had more than a few run-ins with over-compensating HD owners looking to "take down" a little rice-burner Jap bike. My favorite had to be the full dresser on a freeway who couldn't possibly let a the inferior Honda pass! His problem may have been the huge head of ego that was connecting the grips to the seat though. ::)

However, more than that, I personally love the times you're sitting at a gas station and a guy on something beautiful comes over to compliment YOUR bike; and you just sit there like 8) Yo, wassup?

I was sitting at a Sheetz with a buddy of mine (and his '81 Goldwing 1100 that we tore down and straightened from a lay-over collision with a guardrail) when an old--I mean 70 or 80 year old--guy with his blanket roll containing his cane slung across the bars, thermos strapped behind the sissy bar, and wife on the back, rides up from his couple hundred mile trip wearing his 30 year old, weather beaten leather coat. Basically, a true, nose in the wind, kinda dude. What's he riding? A beautiful '70-something Moto Guzzi that has been lowered, raked, had custom bars and risers, full paint job, custom mag wheels, the works! What happens? He gets off to get coffee and spends the next 40 minutes telling us about how much he misses his CB350! We're drooling over his bike and he's swearing by mine! HA! ;D Have to add that he liked the Goldwing as well, but who doesn't like a well-chromed, polished-up, fully-lit GW? :)

Finally got my lower crank cases. Some cosmetic issues but I think I can fix 'em up with some JB Weld. Got the gasket set in as well. Now I simply need to order a seal kit. 8)

So... here is what I'm looking at right now and what it would take to do a good build up on a limited budget. What would be my best options here? I'd like to bore out to 62mm, so should I go with 750 pistons or KZ650? Are there better options out there? :-\

As far as valves go, I'd like to go a bit bigger, but from my understanding, these valves are already about at the limit in size. According to some of my figures, with the stock valve size of 32mm intake, 26mm exhaust the lift should be at about .315" for max flow and efficiency. There are aftermarket 550 race cams that meet this standard, but I'm a little shady on duration, timing figures, and what-not.

The cam figures I was looking at are here:
Megacycle Motorcycle Camshaft Catalog
under the 500/550 four (1971-1878) The street/strip cam offers plenty high lift. The "lobe centers" figure is to show the overlap, no? If so, the overlap is close, so it should offer better top end right? With the longer duration, it will also provide better mid-range power too? Yet again I say, I'm a little shady on figures. I'm an excellent parts changer, but no mechanic yet!

I'd also like to take the comp ratio up some. My understanding is that is is currently 9.0:1. What is pretty much the highest I can run with stock rods, crank, etc.? Like I said before, I don't mind octane boosters and pushing the limits; but I do mind leaving rods on the ground and gaping holes in the block! :o

Just playing with ideas right now before I jump in and blow some $$. I'm not really able to get my hands on parts right now either to personally compare. Help? :-[ Any input will be GREATLY appreciated!

That thread was a good read! I'll have to drop him a PM.

The end of last week I got the old girl to run by tossing is some higher weight oil, taking the oil pressure up. She quit ticking so badly on the lower end so, in essence, I got her running again. Just a band aid for now, but I'm still accumulating parts and what-not. I don't want to officially put her down until I'm actually ready for the build.

Today I played around with the front forks a bit. The '81 forks are longer than stock and so they kinda mess with the look of the bike, jacking the front end up and all. So I pulled the ignition switch, fuse block, and choke out of the way, loosened the triple clamps up, and slid the forks up through the clamps, effectively lowering the front end down. They are air assist so there is still the hose connecting them above the ignition and fuse cover, but all in all I don't think it looks all that terrible. :) Then I turned the drag bars down a bit so they have more of a "clubman" look to them. Pretty swanky really! ;D I'm gonna try and finally upload some pics. Technical difficulties have stood in my way thus far.

Oh, yeah. And I found out that the mufflers were rusting out where they are welded to the pipe. Figured, since they weren't really doing anything anyway, I'd just drop them. Cut them off pretty cleanly and now I'm looking at what I can do to muffle them. Found some in-pipe baffles to reduce the noise so I ordered them (I'm cheap, what can I say ;) ). I'm gonna modify them a bit to still muffle some of the noise, but allow the "drag pipe" flow. Hopefully, they will eliminate the "reverberating flow" problem that is inherent with open pipes.

Ok... it's 1:30am and I think I finally figured out how to post pics. So here it goes...

DISCLAIMER: the garage is not my own and neither is the mess ;) However, I must take full responsibility for the ugly bike... :-[

Last spring, 2 days after bringing her home and a lawn tractor batter successfully installed ;D

Shined up and out in the light of day, running once more! (with a proper batt. of course ;) )

As she sits today... sorry, I haven't cleaned her up since midsummer... :-[

So... lay it on me. How terrible is she? :-[ ;D

Sure! But I've been running mine for 9 months! :o That was the problem though. Ever since I got the girl, almost everything has been "form follows function; make it work by Monday". I couldn't afford down time as this was my primary work vehicle. :(

BTW: Like the rear sets! I was just thinking how I might make a set for myself (I try and save $ by making what I can). :D

I got some better pics today, in the sunlight. Couldn't take her outside yet, still too much snow, even with all of my shoveling. :( Makes it difficult to drive her back in when your spinning on a layer of packed snow; especially with no mufflers!! :o My neighbors already don't like me... ::)

There are a few Honda models from that time that run a similar set-up.  I don't know if any of those will fit, Honda is good at putting 3 different part numbers on the same part and saying they are for different bikes.

Ok, so I got my cheapy-cheap baffles in today. They aren't those horrid "glasspack" baffles, but just a section of tubing with tabs bent inward in an alternating, perpendicular pattern. Pretty much still open exhaust.

After spending 45 minutes literally pounding those suckers in there, they did absolutely na-da for the sound. >:( I kinda figured they wouldn't, but I thought it worth a try. HOWEVER, I have not taken her out on the road yet to see if it eliminated the mid-range "dead spot" I gained in dropping the mufflers in the first place... Oh yeah, and when I pulled the tank to un-stick my frozen choke cable (of course! >:( ) I snapped the nipple off of my fuel filter (naturally! >:( ) and I had to rig on one from the surplus shelf which was about 6,000,000 times larger. :o Now, since I had to re-route the hose a bit, it has a bit of a... tight spot in it. Not really a kink, perhaps a small cinch... but I noticed the bike seemed to be running lean so I believe the new hose setup is the culprit. Just figures; if it's not one thing, it's another!

Hey. This has probably been asked about a million times already, but repetitio est mater studiorum. ::) I'm looking at a '79 650 front Comstar that is single disc. I, of course, need the dual discs for my '81 650C forks. Can I simply remove the cap and put on the dual discs? I know the '79-'80 single rotors are too small, so I would need the '81-'82 larger discs, but is it direct bolt-on fitment? It's really annoying the minute differences Honda used in these areas so any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm not sure if the second disc will bolt straight on, my '79 650 had dual disc from factory.  A lot of the time with Honda, when they made a change they used the same tooling, so even though the part looks different, it still bolts straight up.  The best thing I can suggest is to take a measuring stick to the wheels and figure it out. ;D

Ok. So today I played around with her a bit and apparently it was getting fuel fine. So I was searching out the problem of the backfiring, manually choking the air intake and tuning and what-not. Seems like it runs better with the intake choked to I think it is time for re-jetting. I'm not sure what to run it up to though. I believe stock is 120, no? I did an online calculator and they recommended 135 mains and 40 pilots. Sound appropriate? :-\ This girl has a K&N air filter and open (barely baffled) exhaust.

Also, the backfiring problem was more severe on the #4 cylinder. Figured out that this is because when I tightened the header back on, I must have broken one of the studs on the #4 and didn't know it! Bah! Now I need to pull a stud and replace it... great. >:(

Don't you just LOVE people!?! Someone broke into my garage today, opened the drains on my carbs, and turned my petcock on, draining my FULL tank of premium gas. I now have no gas in my bike and a pool of 3 gallons of gas on the ground under her! >:(

I haven't wanted to kill someone this bad for a while...

Figured since she's out of gas now, good time to tear the bowls off and see what the carbs look like. Haven't had these things off since... June? Somehow, oil has gotten into the airbox and down in the carbs along with some water (what the heck? Maybe the world really did end the 21st and everything is falling apart! >:( ). Anyway, I pulled the jets and found that someone has already jetted this thing--but they jetted smaller??? :o 112.5 mains and aftermarket 35 pilots (which is stock? Why jet SMALLER mains and replace pilots STOCK? I'm lost on this one.) Between all the crap I've run into, every leaking gasket, and all the little things that have been screwed with on this poor girl, I have to ask: What in the world have I gotten into!? :-\ Now to figure two things: why has it been running so well on SMALLER jets and what do I now need to jet it to? Oh, and where do I get an exhaust stud? And on that note, I'm going to bed...
