73 cb500 no spark
« on: July 10, 2020, 12:55:45 PM »
Hello all. Here is the deal. 1973 CB500 gift from the wife a couple years ago. Not to much ride time on it. I start and ride it around the block once every few months. Tried to start recently with no luck. I have no spark. I have ruled out the kill switch (power to the black & white at the coils). It has DYNA ignition system that looks pretty new. I am pretty unfamiliar with the electrical on these bikes but picking a few things up. Stator looks to be in great condition. Could the coil setup be bad? It has a new battery as well. I am a newb so pretty lost on electrical. It sits in a shed when not riding so not sure what would cause the spark to just stop. Any help is very much appreciated.

Check the power lead to the dyna, there was a spate of dynas dying and on the 500/550 they put too much load on the charging circuit
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

start with every and all electrical connectors, clean all those gang plugs etc,the 500 only had one fuse,be sure its intact and contacts are clean, its often a simple fix if it was running before it was parked(weve heard that one?)

Turns out that it has the 5ohm Dyna coils. They need to be disconnected to do an ohm test correct?
