Yoshimura Exhaust, CB400F - How Rare???

So how rare are these Yoshi exhausts?
400F on the day of collection before works begun on a full Cafe Racer conversion.

Yoshi exhaust bead blasted and powder coated, ready for refitting to the Cafe Racer project 8)

Those Yoshi ones are pretty rare now, they easily were damaged due to number 3 pipe being so vulnerable, and the silencer would rot out too. I haven't seen one for sale in a long time. They do sound nice tho (I've got one that I had on my 460, replaced it with a Marving) and work well at the top end, although it's tricky to set the carbs up to suit it really nicely in the midrange. Ground clearance is excellent and they are really nice and light.

Rest of the bike looks a bit too original to cafe - if it was mine I'd stick a stock exhaust on it & sell it then use the profits to buy a project bike.

This cafe racer fashion fad is the spell of death for many vintage bikes. 400f IS factory cafe I believe. The only step up is to make it actual race bike. I think any old Yosh exhaust in this condition could be considered rare.

Good question, I have seen and owned a few Yoshi exhausts and never saw one with headers like that, even Yamiya's Yoshi replica looks nothing like that pipe....

It's definitely an original Yoshi, I've even got an original catalogue from the late 70s somewhere with it in (they claimed quite a few bhp gain at the the top end too). And a spare brand new number 3 pipe, which might come in useful sometime. I have only ever seen them in chrome finish- I guess yours has been stripped?

Oddly enough, the style of Yoshimura 400F exhausts that the likes of MC-Again sell nowadays seems to be a modern invention, I've never seen a 1970s/80s Yoshimura 400f exhaust like those. They are actually much more like the Yoshima exhaust, which Marving have rather blatently copied too.

If thats the pipe i think it is  {Yamiya sell them in Japan} then thats more like the traditional Yoshi pipes, they had hand bent  headers with a beautiful curve to them. Most, if not all of the Yoshi race pipes from the 70's had the hand bent headers I've seen at least 4 different types of original Yoshi pipes {race and after market}  and i have a 70's Yoshi catalog here somewhere, still never seen a Yoshi with headers like that. Not trying to dispel what you are saying but i have seen a lot of Yoshi's and NEVER one like that... I am prepared to learn something new so post pics of the catalog if you can... ;)

Yeah mate, that's the one from the link I posted, that looks more like a "traditional" Yoshi pipe. I've never seen a yoshi pipe that looks like yours? ;D

Yep, that's the type they make nowdays, if you go on MC-Again's site they even have them in titanium and they look fantastic (for about £2k). I'd never seen a Yoshimura one in that style for a 400 til just a few years ago, but of course Yoshimura made ones like that for 750s & GS750s many years back.
