Headlight Ears
« on: May 14, 2005, 06:40:18 AM »
Almost done with my front fork rebuild, but wondering what members think about headlight ears, pretty rusty on the backside and inside, but look ok on the outside.  Should i replace them or try to rehab them.  If i should replace them does anyone have the part numbers for the left and right headlight ears on a CB750 K4.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Nothing on these bikes are cheap anymore, If nobody else notices and you have a clear conscience, leave well alone. If they are annoying you.....change them, If they are annoying you that much you won't mind the cost. Meanwhile just be on the lookout for some nicer ones .......if available.

When I restored my "75" cb750 my right hand fork headlight ear had a hole rust through on the back side where they all seem to bubble up. I found one through a cycle salvage. It had never been mounted on a bike. It cost me a $100.00.

Part nos are 51606-341-701xw (left side) and 51602-341-701xw (right side).
Left side probably still available, but right side has been discontinued. I got one (NOS) on ebay after
MANY bidding wars, on numerous auctions against the same guy every time. Hope you have better luck. There are  good used ones out there though.

Go to an auto paint store and get a bottle of rust dissolver. It's a low grade acid that you can either soak your headlight ears in, or just spray on and wipe off with some fine grade steel wool. It won't harm your chrome, and will remove all your rust. Just wash it all in warm soapy water tand then rinse to neutralise the acid. Cheers, Terry. 8)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

if you are unhappy with them, why not get them rechromed, most shops do a rust neutralisation, then a rechrome...just a thought...peace

Mine were in similar condition. I bought a gallon of store brand vinegar (yes vinegar) and a disposable lasagna pan, filled the pan with the vinegar, and soaked the headlight ears for a couple of hours. The rust literally wiped off with a dish sponge. the chrome looks great. The vinegar is a very weak acid and works great on old rusted nuts and bolts as well.

Yep, vinegar and SALT - the old mediaeval cure for rust on chainmail! Nothing new under the sun. However...try MOLASSES! fill said lasanga tray with molasses and soak for a couple of days.....

Good one Phylo, my cuz has a molasses tank at home, he was restoring a 1915 Indian "Power Plus" motorcycle and the frame was just a mass of rust, so he dunked it in the tank for a few days and it "ate" all the rust. Don't know how/if it'll affect the chrome though, it's pretty aggressive. Cheers, Terry. 8)
