Paintless dent repair?
« on: January 12, 2013, 08:43:07 AM »
Restoring my original paint K5 and have a couple small dents I would like to get out. Paint is in good cond and am not painting over the Planet Blue.
Contacted a guy and he said he couldnt do it, metal on tank is too thick?

Post your expearience if you've had it done to your SOHC tank and pics would be great.

Here's the bike, will post close up of the tank later. One dent on top is visible in this pic.

I just had a couple of large fist-sized dents taken out of the top of my F0 tank.  Haven't seen the result yet, but my dent guy said they're "better but not perfect" which is an acceptable answer to me, as my build isn't a restoration.  I'm getting my tank today, I'll post the results.

I just had a couple of dents worked out of my '75, CB750F tank by a paintless guy, looks perfect.  He told me up front he would give it a try, he is usually 50/50 on motorcycle tanks and could not give me a guarantee.  In my case he said if he was not successful he would not charge me.  It cost me $75 and I'm real happy with the result.  Basically I'm thinking I could have done it myself, its a matter of having the right tools.  He has a variety of steel probes with various bends to get to the place he needs to be.  He had a cotton cloth rubber banded over the tip, I imagining the tip is like a steel ball and he puts the cloth over it to buffer the pressure he applies.

He has a very bright light that he shines across the dent and then just starts working the dent out, you can see the metal bending under the light.  Releases the pressure to see how far the metal moved and so on and so on.

The very 1st issue is if he can get one of his tools to the backside of the dent and apply pressure.  In my case they were both easily accessible!

What I would recommend, and what I did, was just started asking around at the auto repair shop I used, etc.  My auto shop guy referred me to a guy that paints motorcycle tanks.  When I went and showed him what I had he referred me to the paintless guy.  I'm thinking there are some guys who have experience with the kinda thick steel we have on our tanks and most of them are not.  Most auto skins now seem to be paper thin, you can push a dent into them easily.

Here's the dent in my K6 tank that was there when I bought it from the PO. Other than this I would give the tank a 8 out of 10 rating, still very nice for original paint. After almost 4 years the dent doesn't bother me like it use to. I guess I'm just use to it. I did let a dent guy look at it one time and he said didn't think he could to anything for it.

I have removed similar dents by placing internal pressure using a plumber's pipe-check .......its a rubber bulb with an inflation hose.......up to 40 lbs.  With internal pressure, I use a round nylon body hammer and a cloth to protect the paint.  I have not been perfect, but on tanks to be painted, a little sanding primer and it looks good.

Sometimes you can use a hairdryer and DRY ICE to remove shallow  dents.
Heat the dent area, mainly the very middle with the dryer (HOT TO TOUCH) then place a chunk of dry ice right on the dent..
The heat helps to soften the metal and the DRY ICE causes the metal to shrink..

I've done it , always worth a try !
