I`ve found it
« on: July 13, 2006, 02:17:41 AM »
Hello To everyone!
I have found one CB 500 (1972), in advertisment.
It has 52.000 km. The guy wants 900 euros. He`s the second owner.
Is that too much?

I`ll be going next week to see the bike, so can you please tell on which things should i look.

Thanks!!
Marko

Listen to the engine for bags and nocks, the miles are not a problem if the engine has regular oil changes and tunes ups

I agree, the miles aren't bad if it has been reasonably maintained. Since you are going to get a chance to see it, any  chance you can do a compression check? That might give you some clues as well. Where are you located?
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

See, the bike has 52.000 KM, not miles. So it`s 32500 miles. I`m in Serbia (Former Yugoslavia). Yes, i could do a compression check. The process is supposed to be with full chock and throttle?
Is 900 euros a lot for such bike?

I`m just afraid that if i miss this one, who knows when will i found another one, because Hondas werent selling in my country, so there were only few examples...

Hey Marko,

I have a 1972 CB500 Four.  I don't believe 52000Km is too much as long as the bike has been well maintained.

Do you know what an original 500 looks like?  This is important because you will be able to spot any modifications, like exhaust, tank etc..

I would still suggest you do the following things:

1) Compression test, doesn't take long and it is a good indicator of engine health.

2) Ask when the points, valves, timing has been checked.  If he doesn't know, this is not good.  By listening to the bike run, you can determine if these things were done.

3) has the bike been run regularly over the years.  If not you may have issues with the carbs, they are quite sensitive to old gas, dirt etc.

4) Take a close look at the gas tank, especially at the seams towards the back, if you see blisters this indicates rust and may cause leaks in the near future.  Also, open the tank and look inside, it should be reasonably clean without much rust.

5) Start the bike when the engine is cold, these bikes are notorious for cold starts. If the engine is warm when you get there, be suspicious.

5) Test all switches and electronics, don't assume they work.  The easiest way is to start the bike, try all lights, signal lights, brake lights etc..

6) Check the drivetrain, chain and sprockets and of course check tires for unusual wear or cracks.

7) Check exhaust for leaks or holes, easiest done when bike is running.  Original exhaust pipes for these bikes are expensive to replace.

In the end, you can't expect a new bike but 900 Euros is a good price if the bike is in decent shape and well maintained.

Hope this helps,

Claude

For you US guys, 900 EUROS is about $1150 USD.

It's a little high in my opinion, but if the bike is in really nice shape, it vould be worth it. (Especialy if they are rare where you are).

Thanks!

The bike is registered, and it`s been driven for 6 years until now.
Firstly the man bought a bike from a first owner where it was sitting for 3 years. He said, that he completely restored everything that need.
He said that the originall exaust went off, but he couldn`t find original, so he put some Marvel  ???or so. 4-1. I`m not sure about the company of exaust, but it`s something  on M ;D

Do i need some special compression checker, or regular from car will do the work?
If the engine`s good how much should be compression?

Car compression tester will not do they are small threads on the plugs. Exhaust could be anyhting, the originals are available but cost about £375 (GBP) a set, as to the price you would pay about that for a basket case here in UK its all relative
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

;D...Hi  Marko...we (in the USA)  have no idea what it is worth $ where you are...it is worth:  whatever someone will pay for it..for compression check, if you don't have a tester,.. http://www.dansmc.com/troubleshooting.htm....sez"remove spark plugs, place your finger over the hole, crank the engine, if it blows your pinky away, it has good compression".  :D..or somthing like that.  are you a wrench??http://www.ratbike.org/...these guys make a bike run on parts from tractors, etc...good luck.... ;D

€900 = £620 so not bad for a running 500/4 in UK (which is more like Serbia than US...)

Fixing anything less than a junked engine is pretty easy but the cosmetics can be expensive depending upon what you want.

Original-look tank and sidepanels, 4-4 exhaust will cost a lot more than the bike.

If it looks OK, sounds OK and you can ride it away - I'd go for it.

Exhuast is probably a MARVIK, made in Holland, also sold as  JAMA (maybe JARMA?) originals. I think they are still in business.

32000 miles is okay for the bike if it has been well maintained.  The maintenence and care for the bike over this amount of mileage and 34 years time are a HUGE factor when determining bike value.  In the end, though, the bike is worth what seller and buyer agree to.

A compression check is done with OPEN Choke (choke off) and throttle wide open.  You will need a 12mm adapter for the spark plug hole.  The absolute compression numbers vary from test instrument to test instrument depending on the volume of the test adapter hose, as it can diminish the readings by the chamber volume added.

Well, i went to see the bike ;D
It has new tires (front metzeler, rear bridgestone).
It looks like it`s never been fallen (i mean the bars, side covers, gear, rear brake pedal, it all seams intact).
Bike has no tendencies to pull on some side when i let the hands.
It started nice with choke, with one second of starting. It was cold by the way. But two days ago, his title (licence) expired... (That`s a little guess, why he was selling it first way)... He has another bike as well for daily drive...

He agreed to give it to me for 800euros.
I said to him that i`ll think about it and let him know... ???

Marko - when I bought my 550F she had 48K mls on the clock (which is roughly 75.000 km) and she was still going like stink. When I took the head off for the usual gasket-change extravaganza I had a close look at the liners for visual wear/scratches and measured them for diameter and ovalness. Result: everything's within tolerance. As this bike is undergoing major cosmetic surgery at the moment anyway I might as well do a complete engine job, but I'm convinced the engine would have been good for another couple of grand without a complete overhaul.
800 EUROs seems excellent value for money to me. Go for it and don't forget to post some pics.

Success,...

How long did you have to wait to find this one? How long will you have to wait for another? Probably worth it if you really want this type of bike.
