76 550 fork tube powdering (?)ohlins forks?
« on: December 26, 2012, 06:25:04 PM »

I found some fork tubes that were being sold colored for around 300$
Way too much, i think dime city.
Not sure where.
I pulled off my fork tubes pulled it apart and planned on taking them in to be powdered black so they will match  my fork legs i had powdered  black.  I noticed at the bottom of the  tubes theres a circular  pressed.in part ..i cant seem to move  it out or get  it to budge. How can i get that out?  What  is it and how  can i remove  it? I would like to remove  it so i can powder  these forks.
* i guess since im on the forks question  has anyone  bought  Ohlins forks and used them on an old 550? Where can  i find a set ?

If you are talking about powder coating the upper tube (#2) that is a bad idea.  The build up of powder coat or paint will not work with the oil seal.  I am not sure which part you are referring to being pressed in.  Which part is it on the fiche?

I don't think you can powder the fork tubes.  Fork legs, sure.  Go for it.  But powder adds thickness (minimal, but still) and will interfere with your fork seals (which I think is what you mean by the black pressed in part, #22 on the diagram above).
I have seen those colored tubes too.  Always assumed it was some sort of anodizing.

Yeah you don't want anything but the smoothest chrome finish on the upper tubes. If you're full o' money, titanium nitride can give the tubes a great look and is a superhard finish that will last 1000 years give or take.

You can powdercoat the lowers of course, just protect the seal seats and anything with threads. You'll also prob wanna tape off the bottoms where the face mates with the axle locks and axle -- powdercoat paint is actually pretty thick, and if you don't tape off, you'll be changing the way the oem parts fit together with it.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

Even if you anodize them your still going to have it where off in time from the seals but if you are determined to do it. You might check into gun blueing
