Valve Spring Compressor
« on: July 12, 2006, 12:24:51 PM »
Hey Guys,

After trying the ol' Pep Boys compressor as well as an 8" eBay special, I'm beginning to wonder what tool I need to sucessfully compress the springs on my CB360. Can anyone recommend a Valve Spring Compressor that will work for these Honda motorcycle heads?

I'm looking to spend around $50.

Thanks,

Evan

Would it also work for a CB650 SOHC?  I'm gonna be rebuilding my head very soon, and this tool would very much come in handy.

Here's what it look like...

Basically the same, except our rocker arms are instaled in the cylinder cover.

Might be completely off-base having never seen a 360 apart. Pic of an 1 1/2" long x 1" dia thickwall aluminum tube with a 1/2" slot drilled and hacksawed out of one end. I used it with a large C clamp - worked perfectly and the price was right considering it will probably only get used twice.

Good ol' z1enterprises.com have just the tool, downside is it costs $146.50.  I would justify the cost two ways  (i) They sell good quality products that work  (ii) You're gonna have it when you're seventy..

I dont think the J C Whitney one will work on the CB650 as the head is completely different design to the 360. (there isnt room to get a 'flat' type compressor in there) Z1 is selling from K&L catalogue, the one shown is a Yamaha copy (and its pretty damn good, I have Yam one) K&L also do a tubular framed version part no. 35-1070 (but they severly overcharge for it, I've seen them advertised for $35.00~40.00)  the adaptors are a bit small for CB360, but it will work OK

Any thoughts on the type that Harbor Freight sells? It grips one of the lower coils with it's lower arm and pushes the retainer with it's upper arm as you turn the turn screw. This allows you to remove the keepers. Cost is about 10 bucks.
