Goofy's CB550 Build

Hey guys, I'm starting a build thread for my bike.  Here is the link to my introduction, complete with the progress I have done so far.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=112727.0

Today I got the bike down to the frame and all the tabs I don't need cut off and ground down.  This will be a slow build, but I plan to have the bike up and running by the end of winter and ready to ride by summer, might be taking a trip to south dakota with a buddy.

So far my plan is to paint the frame red, with red tank and black paint in the knee dents. My spokes are rusted and pitted so I'm thinking black spokes with a shiny rim would match pretty good for the paint scheme.

Well the frame is screwed now.  The down tubes are bent out towards the front tire.  The bike was laid down in the past, had bent handlebars and crash bar and taillight and was missing a highway peg on one side of the crashbar.  So now I'm looking for a new frame!





Thats alright, I got plenty of work to do cleaning up all these little parts and taking a part the wheels to paint and polish.  And I will be dissasembling the engine.

Finally an update to the project.  I went on a honeymoon with the wife, and drove down to Indiana to get a frame from greybeard50, very nice guy.  The trip wasn't all for the bike frame ::), we also stayed in Chicago a night on the way back and went sight seeing the next day, we went to the navy pier and just walked around downtown. 

So now I have a good straight frame with a title, original from 1977 I think it was.  And I've been busy putting up drywall and insulation in the garage so I can work on it during the winter.  I almost had the frame blasted and painted at my work but we're just too busy right now to throw her on the paint line so I'm just going to strip and paint it myself. 

And tonight I decided to start tearing down the engine, I didn't get the engine running before I stripped the bike when I got it, although I sprayed starter fluid in her and she putted a little.  I'm betting the bike was just sitting for years because it got in an accident and had a bent frame.  The odometer read 27K I think, cant remember off the top of my head.

Heres my work area, kind of messy don't have storage setup yet.  Sorry for blurry pictures, they were taken with my phone camera and it was about 40 degrees.

And I had a question about my carbs, I plan on buying a used set but I was confused about the main jet on these carbs.  All 4 carbs look as bad as this one.

So, if you are within specs after the honing , you'll be using the stock pistons right? Where you able to get the wrist pin keeps out without mangling them? Some guys reuse them if they aren't beat, the manual says to replace them, I always replace them, it's a cheap price for piece of mind.

The clips came out alll mangled and I read just to replace them since they're cheap.  I haven't measured anything yet but I plan on honing and putting new rings on these pistons as long as everything is within spec.

I think I might need a different camshaft, there is some pitting or chipping on most of the lobes, I can't get a good picture with my camera though it just won't focus on the lobe haha ill have to try again tomorrow.  The rocker arms look good though no scratches or anything, the camshaft journals look decent, no scratches just normal wear.

That's what I heard Steve.  Do I need any special parts for the 650 cam besides a 650 tachometer?

It's been a while since I've posted. Haven't had much time to work on the bike but this weekend I moved a bunch of parts to the basement since my garage isn't heated yet. 

I got the frame painted, I just used spray cans, but I goofed up, I used a poor quality red spray paint, Hardware Hank brand and the nozzles just are terrible, if it had the dupli-color nozzles they would of turned out better. 



I just did a quick mock up, I think I need to use my swingarm from my 550F, I painted the 1974 550K swingarm that came with the frame but it seems my rear wheel wont fit with the hardware from the F.  Unless I am doing it wrong haha. 

Also I found out my rims shine up good enough for me, they have some scratches but it will be good enough for me, and the chrome is gone on the spokes, so I'll be sanding the spokes and painting them black and the hubs still shine up so I think it will look good.  I cleaned up the rear shocks, but I think I'm still going to buy some nicer ones in the future.

I painted the tripple trees black, that turned out good, I used dupli-color black gloss.  I still need to buy the tapered steering head bearings, I'll probably get those next month, and then after that i'll be buying the engine gasket set/piston rings

Thanks for the link Steve, do you have any recommendations for an engine gasket set? I was going to buy the one from dime city for $130 unless i heard of a better deal.

DCC is a little pricey, I like the Vesrah set for $90, confirm it has everything you need.
