weird rear wheel drift when braking
« on: May 19, 2005, 04:11:38 PM »
just rebuilt the rear caliper, installed it.
now when i use the rear brake, the rear wheel feels as though it drifts right -- pretty significant, and pretty unnerving.  i am going to tear apart the rear end and look at the bushings on the rear swingarm, but other than that i can't think og what it may be.
any suggesstions?
thanks all!

My 78 CB550K had some strange behavior with power changes.  Turns out half the rollers in the roller bearing on the sprocket side were smashed, disintegrated, and gone.  Most of the time the remaining rolers would space themselves out and the bike would track as predicted but radical power or descelleration (well, for a 550, anyway) and the rollers would bunch up and the wheel would skew out of alignment.  Kind of like riding on marbles.  Coasting and they would feel fine again.  A new bearing solved the problem.  But, I imagine if the brake disk side axle bearings went out in a similar way, it might feel as you describe under braking conditions.
Just a thought...

sounds like you may have not put in on of the spacers, or the rear wheel is loose.

twotiered...
"marbles" is exactly what it feels like.  I'll check the bearing out this weekend and report back...

i, too, thought maybe the rear wheel is loose.  but the bolt is cranked, i cannot imagine it needs to be **too** cranked.  how many spacers are there?  I remember one on each side, one with a flange the other a simple cylinder.  Did I lose something?

Thanks for the replies, guys
