Jay Leno's CBX 1000

Not a SOHC or a four, but still in the Honda family (even if it is a DOHC >:( ). I would love to get my hands on one of these someday, strip it down, and make a street-bob. Love the huge engine! ;D

Wonder if those front discs would work with my '81 CB650C forks and calipers? ;)

The front discs on the 81/82 CBX model were designed by the Honda automotive division just for the CBX. I've never seen another application but they are sweet to look at.

Now that nearly all high-performance motorcycles have triple disc brakes, two in front and one at the rear, Honda could give the CBX distinction only by doing something difficult. That's what they did, creating for the occasion a brake rotor of such intricacy that few manufacturers would attempt to make its equal.

Rather than drill the expected pattern of holes through the sides of an otherwise solid disc, Honda cast (in stainless alloy) a rotor much like those fitted on large cars. That is, Honda cast in ventilating holes leading from the rotor's hub to its perimeter. It is a dazzling display of mastery of the foundry arts and admirable even if it actually accomplishes little more than all the drilled holes.

Want, want, want, want, want.... ;D

I'm almost half tempted to try an fit them! If the mounting bolts are the same pattern as other Comstars and the offset isn't ridiculous, I'd bet they would work! ;) Something as beautiful as those babies would REALLY set my 650 apart! 8)

Good luck finding a set. Most are worn under Honda specs. If you flea bay any ask the thickness and hope they answer the question. I sent mine to True Disc out in Michagan for a resurface. Great people, same day turn around.

EBC makes different pads to offset the wear of the rotor. You also have to set the caliper distance to the rotor with a feeler gauge.

The FA-69 pad is 10mm thick (each), the FA-69/2 is 9mm and the FA-69/3 is 11mm.

I'd use the FA-69/2 for the front and FA-69 for the rears. You will be adding more weight with these rotors if they work.

Yeah, I was looking at Evil-bay and found a set--sold separately of course! They had plenty of meat left to them, but they are going for $30 each! Then I would have to get the calipers to match (the '81 650C dual pistons I have don't open wide enough >:( ). Then there is the increase in rotational mass (as mentioned). All these variables really turn me away from the idea... but they look sooo awesome!!! Maybe, in time, when I hit the lottery, I'll get a set and try them out.

On that note: Anyone have an old, worn-out set they wanna part with!?! ;)

$30.00 is cheap! Especially if within spec.

Just buy a CBX. You won't regret it.  ;)

Load up the debit card first.  ;D

Wow.  For my whole life I have thought Jay Leno was an annoying windbag, but this video changed my opinion.  I knew he liked wild vehicles, but he really seems like a serious and knowledgeable lifetime fan.  Huh.  I'm happy about this.

Leno's first passion is and always has been cars & motorcycles. Listen to him tell the story of how he talked his father into letting him order the powertrain combo (when he was 16!) in their familys new 7 litre 1966 Ford Galaxie 500.  He may be a bit of a windbag, but I think he can back it up... ;D ;D ;D

Yeah; though his humor is really an "either love it or hate it" thing, his knowledge and experience with bikes, cars, etc. is impressive at the least! I just watched an episode today where he went over a '60-something Lamborghini tractor and even delved into the history with David Brown (founder of Aston Martin) and why Lamborghini started making tractors and supercars in general. His (automotive) shows usually prove most interesting and educational! ;D

Leno has a genuine passion for all things mechanical which pretty much explains his rather eclectic collection and what I admire the most is that when restoring a car he does so with the intention that it can actually be driven. I once read an article he wrote where he explained that there are no more spare cyl heads for Duesenbergs at all and that most don't run because their cyl heads are literally rotted out. No problem for Leno, he found someone in Wisconsin I believe who cast brand new reproduction castings of Duesenberg heads to address this problem and for a cool $70k you can have yourself a brand spanking new, fully assembled ready to bolt on exact copy of a Duesenberg cyl head.

The part I envy though is his ability to fork over $70k without even thinking about it. :)

Yeah well when you're a multi multi millionaire you can have anything you want.   It's just cool that he has time to enjoy all of his toys and actually drives them.   Not like some richies who collect things and stash them on a shelf to not use them.

He knows his stuff, but he made a few "errors" with the CBX

You don't need to drop the motor forward to do the valves, you only need to do that when working on the carburetors (or when changing a throttle cable!)

It doesn't idle high because it's lean. The standard idle is between 1000 & 1100 RPM. The idle needs adjusting (possibly the cables are a bit hung up)

The alternator only "click clicks" when the plates need replacing

He was right about the wear on the alternator brushes, then he corrected himself

I rode my 78 twin shock yesterday. A Japanese guy asked what I would sell it for. Simple answer - I will never sell it. I told him that ones like mine go for about $15,000 AUD

^^^Well... not everyone is perfect! I've been know to forget my brain-mouth filter at home when talking about technical stuff. ::) His show isn't a technical, how-to; it's still for entertainment.
