Had MRI on the left shoulder, torn, ..

Tore my right shoulder, who knows when. Finally bothered me enough to follow up on it. MRI confirmed the tear. Opted for the surgery. Six weeks in a sling followed by some rehab. The surgery was not a big deal and the shoulder is fine now. You might look into it.

Oh, one more thing. You think torn cuffs are sports related? According to my surgeon 75% of them are from aging.  :'(

Doc says the tear is inoperable. Gave me some meds for pain and told me to call when the pain becomes unbearable, then I'll get another shot.

Have been too scared and/or lazy to go to the golf course to see if I can play still.

At the ripe old age of 27, I'm off work with 2 buldged discs in my lower back, they are pressing on a nerve and giving me shocking pain and numbness in my left leg.  I've been going to physio the last few weeks, and I can walk again but it is going to be a while before I'm back into full swing.  I guess I should refrain from lifting clutches and wheel hubs that weigh in the region of 80kg when I only weigh 75kg :-\.

I love these threads, I don't really know why, maybe it's like "Show and Tell", without the "Show"? Or maybe it's just cathartic to compare scars? Whatever, I like it.

I used to jump out of perfectly good airplanes as part of my job. Some folks would find that exciting, or even slightly romantic, but I found the whole thing rather annoying to be honest. I mean, these things were quite capable of landing, in which case I could just walk down the staircase? Parachuting is such a silly pastime when you think about it.

Anyway, even though I was trained how to roll when landing, ensuring that only the "meaty" parts of my body contacted the ground, my personal landing styles could be described as either a classic "Heels/arse/head", or the more visually spectacular "Toes/Knees/ Nose". There were varying reasons for this, but the end result was the same, some permanent damage was inevitable.

The DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs) didn't have a choice but to accept liability for my injuries when I retired from the Regular Army, but they weren't generous enough to offer me a "Gold Card", where I'd retire from work permanently on a full pension, free public transport, free medical etc, even though I know guys with similar injuries who do. the DVA do, however, grudgingly reimburse me for my medical expenses within two or three months (or sometimes six, they are public servants, so don't like working too hard) of me lodging a claim.

Recently I've had a lot more pain than usual, so I do enjoy the fortnightly massage (it was twice weekly, then weekly, but the government has run out of money, so now it's fortnightly) from my little Vietnamese Physiotherapist, or "Physio The Rapist" as I like to call her. (obviously wishing that she'd live up to her name) My biggest problem though, is that I don't sleep for more than an hour or two each night.

I've tried sleeping pills and they just don't have any affect on me, I had a mate once who was completely impervious to CS Gas (Tear Gas) so I suppose it's possible that drugs that are supposed to knock me out don't, but anyway, I've found that if I take a couple of "Panadeine Extra" mixed with a couple of "Codral for Flu" tablets before I go to bed, I can usually get 4 or sometimes even 6 hours of reasonable quality sleep. I've tried going to sleep without them a couple of times, but it doesn't work and by 2 or 3 am, I'm in the bathroom, taking the tablets again.

I have "anti-inflammatories" that I take during the day, but I don't take them at night as I don't want to add them to my other four tablets that I take when I go off to bed. I went for a ride with Cliff (Maduncle) today that took in around 100 miles of road that varied in quality from quite good, to pretty crap, and the AI's worked quite well. It would be nice if the pain would go away for awhile though, before this injury I very rarely ever took as much as an aspirin, and nowadays I'm living on various medications.

I suppose I wouldn't mind as much, if I actually enjoyed parachuting........ Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'll be 50 in a couple of months and the only real issues is my inability to quit smoking and my legs. About this time last year my legs felt like dead weight, I thought it may be poor circulation but an exam showed it was my lower back that was causing all the problems so my chiropractor has been keeping me on my feet since.

I see by the replies here that I'm not the only one that there body has a hitch in it's get along at times. I think Stev-o at the beginning of this thread ask me if I did any type of working out and yes Stev-o I do and that's part of the problem. Well from years back that's really the issue and old injury's catch up with you as the years roll by. I started lifting weights way back in the 70's in high school and have pretty much continued doing that through the years and still do to this day. I enjoy it. I bought a Powertec gym about 5 years ago and I love it. It shares the garage with my Honda's. I can work out and look at my 750's at the same time ;D No heavy weights anymore just 3 to 4 sets of high reps 12 to 15 and sometime I'll go 20 reps on a few exercises.

54 in a few days. Building houses since age of 24. 3o years of hammering, hearing loss and tennis elbow. Constant lifting and balancing on ladders, bad back, and knees. Dropping heavy objects that I thought I could lift, broken toes. Actually looking up when somebody yells heads up, countless stitches. Inhalation of asbestos from decayed building products, fumes from floor finishes and contact cements, 10 to 20 cigarettes a day....priceless.
I don't know that age is as much of a hindrance to growing older as much as the abuse we taken on a regular basis over the years that we all thought we could power through (Starsnbars, you should find easier work or plan to retire by 42, really.)
This is the age that I've decided, if faced with a gunman , bear, or just a rabid squirrel, I'm fighting, there is just no reason to get worn out trying to run.

I hear ya, man! Hey! did I mention I'm partially deaf in the right ear? :D I do this kinda work 'cause I love it though. I already know I'll be falling apart by 50, but it's worth it! Nothing else gives me quite the sense of accomplishment then hard, back-breaking manual labor for ridiculously long hours everyday ;D . And trust me, I've seen plenty of the consequences first-hand. A 49 year old with a bad back, a 54 year old with tennis elbow and a bad back, etc., etc.--even a 26 year old in physical therapy for a dislocated elbow! I'm content though; injuries and the elegant degradation of the body in general comes with the territory. We all have to die from something!

I will be 55 soon and don't have any real problems.  Have not had any health issues so far, never smoked, never overweight and eat a healthy diet.  I weigh within 5 lbs of what I did when I was 20.  I work at a physical job(construction).  I can usually leave many of my younger friends in the dust and my older friends are sometimes a sad lot. ;D  Growing older has not really bothered me except the realization that I have less time to do all the things I want to accomplish.  It's too easy to push things off thinking there is time to do it later.
One thing I have noticed is that I fart more than I used to. ;D  What's up with that?  My diet is the same.  Does it just come with the territory?

I always earned my buck with my brain, even starting in USA after we crossed the ocean it was computers and CAD design. The thing with manual
labor is that you exchange your body for the paycheck and when there is nothing left, you retire. Pretty hard way to earn living, IMO.  No matter how much of a nonsmoking health nut you are, you still deteriorate from your 40 hours a week.

Heh....it's pain that reminds me I'm still alive. Just passed 58 in September, got a bad ankle, two bad knees, a seperated shoulder, a bone spur in my spine, crepitus in the TMJ and calcium deposits all the way around my neck. and my hair fell out. I've always worked physically demanding jobs, but started feeling my age back at the turn of the century, so I got into tech work and been at desk jobs since. Just haven't had the free time I used to, so I'm definitely out of shape, but considering all the chemicals and toxins I've been exposed to over the yrs, I'm in good health, don't need meds for anything, Tums works for my occasional heartburn. If I could get a couple new titanium knees and an ankle, I'd be back on the slopes in a heartbeat. Tore a calf muscle last time I went skiing.  Yep, the ankle really starts throbbing when the weather changes, I was on an opiate pain management contract for about 8 yrs but I got tired of it so dropped it about 3 yrs ago. Been thinking about it recently tho, and some times my alternate pain managment technique isn't as effective as I would like so I may renew that. But you know, know matter how bad my body may be hurting, when I get on my bike and crack that throttle, all the aches and pains just melt away until I have to stop and get off.
