Let's talk Cigars!
« on: December 30, 2012, 07:18:08 AM »
I have been looking for a good cigar. I smoke one every so often. Makes me feel like a "big shot" in the shop.  ;D

I started a little reading on the subject and buying cigars is like buying a camera! The more you read the more involved it gets! Tobacco, sizing, limited edition, cheap, expensive etc.  ::)

This gets confusing so tell me what you have learned or better yet what you enjoy.

I worked at a cigar shop when I got out of college for a while. I had to smoke bunch of them to learn. I liked Romeo y Julieta's flowery aroma while I was a smoker. Now I don't have urge to smoke much. What have you been smoking?

To many cigarettes! I want to quit..again!

Well, I'm a simple kind of guy. What I enjoyed most was just a plain ole Crooks rum soaked cigar. The Government, in there infinite wisdom to tell me what to do, has banned them from last I read. Can't fine them anywhere.

I have been on the Thompson web site and think maybe just an assortment. Go from there.

I quit smoking cigarettes like 6 years ago. Unlike some cigars and pipe tobaccos, cigarettes' smell is pretty offensive. And you won't know it till you completely quit, becoming a non-smoker.  I smoked cigars and pipes till a few years ago.

I tried some flavored cigars but always settled with decent quality plain cigars. I also liked Punch, and Onyx. We have pretty good cigar shops that let you smoke inside while lounge around, drinking complementary beer, watching ballgames on big screen TV. You guys don't have those in AZ?

Actually yes. At least there was a shop at one time.

I'll have to check that out. I'm sure the bigger cities have several. I live out in the middle of the desert.

I was smoking cigars on special occasions but recently have switched to a pipe. The pipe seems a bit more fiddly, but like our old bikes thats a large part of the fun. Also there is the fun of collecting wacky pipes.

I'm not a smoker but several years ago worked with a guy who turned me onto some rum soaked cigars that were really good. I'd smoke one occasionally when I was drunk!
I ended up buying a box, got em from Thompsons. I dont recall the name but they were square.  A sampler pack is a good idea.

A hundred years ago we had a thriving tobacco industry here in this town..
And today there is still a lot ofl leaf and bud production, but its an underground industry..

You sure they weren't Crooks rum soaked cigars Steve-o?

They were somewhat square in shape.

No, not sure, that does not ring a bell. I know I did buy them at Thompsons, I kept getting their catalogs for years after buying a single box of stogies.

My FIL came back from the Dominican, and handed me a box of Montecristos.  8)  Not bad, but a little long for my tastes.
I prefer a shorter smoke.   4 1/2"-5" in a 47 or 49.
Snip or plug cut the end, and cedar matches only.

I usual keep a few Gurkha Evils and k. Hansotia Ancient Warrior' around for a more normal cigar flavor. I really like the coffee flavored ones as well and normally go for a Jabak Especial robusto.
