Scottly,( i shouldn't have .....but i did )..... it had a lot a drag strip miles on it when i bought it  in U.S. , i clocked up around 40 passes, an around  7000 road  mls ,driving from east coast to L.A, by then it was fairly rattly, which i thought , when i get it back home i'll freshen it up , ( had cast crank ), the temptation back home with a new toy was too much ,( changed oil few times, added some magical additive, said few prayers )drove it to a local drag strip ,run a few passes , all good ,but on the way home ,started gettin real noisy , so i  turned the radio up, an hoped for the best , ...nearly made home (about 5 ks to go )

Looking at the pic again, I'm guessing a rod bolt failed first?

Too much nitro tuneup... Downright impressive when you consider that's a billet block.  :o

Reminds me of a local legend: "Ted" was putting together a hipo short block 440 for his 'Cuda. Working late into the wee hours of the morning, and with no small amount of beer, he fit the last piston/rod assembly into the block, and snugged down the rod bolts. At this point, he decided to hit the sack. He placed the oil pan over the block to keep the dirt out. The next day he returned to the project, saw the pan fitted, and proceeded to bolt it down, thinking that was where he left off. He never torqued the last rod. The motor lasted about 5 minutes... ::)

There's a saying in the nitro pits if the rods stayed in it through the burn out, the diver (bottom end guy) did his job...  ::)
Unfortunately I have also seen them exit while warming up on the jackstands - idling on alcohol. Ouch.  :o

Well it is a SOHC just not a 4
Local track Manfield New Zealand. Chasing a FZ Yamaha (memory says it was a 1000 but probably a 750) He was faster on the straights but I had him in thru the esses. About to line him up for a big dive into the hairpin when bang!, motor was still running, just vibrating a bit. Got back to the pits, spotted the oil leak and knew I had done another barrell!

Sad looking Crew Chief

Looks fairly innocent
