« on: May 29, 2013, 06:04:14 PM »
Been trying to get smooth idle with no results..turns out the rubber boots between the carb an intake had vacuum leak...used carb spray to diagnoise....thinking about spending 48 bucks on new boots  had me thinking again...soaked them in soapy water overnight.......i wrapped black electrical tape around the clamp area ...now a budy is needed to get the carbs on the intake..very tight.......smooth idle now idle bleed 2.5 turn out.....ahhhh   8)

Might be a dumb question, but... how do you find a vacuum leak on your boots with carb spray? What's the process?

After I get this thing running again I still need to address the issue of it not idling nicely when its hot... so I'd like to try this.

What happens is if there is a leak between the carbs and engine it will be sucking air in at the hole or leak. When you induce (ether) starting fluid the RPMs will pick up fast you will hear the engine pick up in speed. If the speed picks up you know there is a leak at the point you sprayed the fluid. I like to use the starting (Ether) fluid for diesel engines it has a little bit of oil in it.

Good idea. I would suggest that you save up for some new boots. The tape will get very hot and probably fail in a short period of time.

Brilliant - thanks for the clarification.

Dumb pilot here! I'll definitely try it!

No it nver does end. 15 years later I am still buying parts and wrenching. I would have suggested you try ti soften the boots to see if they would seal better. That means you would have to pull the carbs which sucks. Enjoy riding and save up for some boots. Be safe!

Idle screws 2.5 turns out!
You need a larger idle jet.

Unless he has non PD carbs ... then he needs a smaller idle jet.
