carb and airbox mounting
« on: March 27, 2006, 09:31:18 AM »
Okay so we had a nice day here yesterday so decided it was time to put my carbs and airbox back on and fire her up and see if my idling issues have been sorted out...This is where my day went from nice to not so nice...

Spent about 2 hours trying to get it all buttoned up and after throwing two or three temper tantrums I finally gently placed everything back in my basement and then promptly punched the wall...

There has to be a trick to this! Anyone have a method that is easy or atleast easier??? Also, routing the cables was a pain in the ass...any help there would be appreciated too...

Help! I will have some day light tonight and am getting desperate to see if all my work on the carbs has worked...

Thanks in advance,
Dennis

P.S. It's a 78 750K

The only solution I would find would be to chop the frame and make a rat bike out of it  :o

Or buy pod filters  ;D

On my CB650's stock setup it takes a strong leather belt, all of my strength and an assistant who doesn't mind me cursing to get everything back in place.  I would go for pod filters if I were in your situation, because rejetting your bike is much easier than trying to rejet the terribly un-customizable '82 CB650SC carbs.  That, and pods are just cool lookin!

Dennis,

Where were you having the most problem, mounting the carbs to the intakes or the airbox and tubes to the carbs?

where did you have the problem? Getting the cables hooked up is a bit of a pain yes but nothing else is that hard unless you left the air box on the carbs and tried to put them on.

Get the carbs on the intake manifolds first and tighten them up. Do the 2 throttle cables then the choke. from there, pull the airbox apart at its seams. This makes it MUCh easier. Mount the top part first to the carbs and then put in the 2 top bolts, After that, mount the bottom part to the top.  Should not be too much trouble then.

Just tossing in my $0.02. I don't tighten the intakes right away. There are some elbows/angles to them and if you don't get them on the correct plane, they draw the carbs away from the airbox slightly and you will be wrestling with that end of things. I leave them loose enough to twist them slightly if necessary when trying to fit the airbox and tubes.

Well...I mounted the carbs first then then fought with the cables then tried to mount the airbox but never thought of doing it in 2 pieces...that could have been the rye clouding my vision though...

The choke cable slipped off (think it may be the wrong length?) and then had to try to put it on with the airbox in place which is part of why I had so much trouble...

I will try it again tonight with the airbox in 2 pieces and see if that buys me enough clearance to get things snugged up...

Thanks for the tips...

The 750's are easy. Fit cables to carbs, fit carbs to engine, fit airbox. Get a CB400 to practice on, after that everything is easy :D

I had the same problem.
the old v-stack boots (oem stock) were hard as petrified Tupperware. 31 years of torture.
Impossible to install. ( using every trick in the book and my special redwood tapered wood door shim sticks)
I bought 4 new ones for $8USD each from crotchrocket, but David Silver spares, in UK has them too.
the new ones are soft as surgical rubber tubing.   honda pn # 17253-341-300
a VAST difference.
The , Aircleaner almost fell on by gravity.  ( 5 min job really)

Using the old ones ,would require a electrical shrink tubing " hot air gun".  But that would be a pain every time one removed the
aircleaner. so new ones are a blessing.

After lots of work, my carbs are now box stock, and very clean.
Getting ready to try them tomorrow with a test tank and then the new carb sync tool ( electronic type).
good day and good luck to all.
