i know it seems crazy using a bicycle spring right? but if you think about it, the majority of the shock forces are transferred through the linkage, the shocks are just there to supress. on the green bike with the schwinn style front end, i actually had a low speed crash on it when i first made it and all was good as far as the spring. customer has been running the bike 4 years with zero issues.

I hear ya - I also know how hard a bicycle shock works on a downhill bike with a 200 lbs rider nailing rocks and roots at 50mph. I'm not trying to get on your case about it - but I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable running that setup myself before doing some careful research. Like learning about your experience.

I really love girder front ends, and those bicycle shocks sure do offer nicer packaging than motorcycle shocks.

I'm not sure how I missed this, but I love what you're doing with the bike; certainly a great take on the old style look. If I had a third of your talent I'd consider myself a lucky man!

This reminds me of the CB550 Dave Cook put together in 2009, winning the Amd Custom Bike Building Championship. I'm sure you're familiar with his work:

Maybe a longitudinally mounted engine in your future?

holy smokes! that drive train is freakin awesume! i have been wanting to find an old sportster ironhead engine(pre-69) to cut the tranny off and mate it to a 4 speed harley tranny but we're talking $1500 and better for that! if i saw any articles on how the honda engine was modified i'd love to play with that idea, hell cb's are dime a dozen you can't lose! anyone?

i just watched a video of the bike running. damn that thing sounded like crap. does anyone know if that was just a first run video or something? whats the point of making something super cool if you can't ride it fer #$%*?

Yeah, that video isn't the best, but you've got to think that if it won the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building (first non-Harley and first American winner, BTW) against 86 other world-class bikes, it had to have run much smoother when it counted!

Here's some further info on the bike:

"Dave Cook’s AMD Championship-winning bike ‘Rambler’ has a distinct vintage feel, and is powered by what he mysteriously refers to as a ‘550 International’ engine—a one-of-a-kind construction using OEM metric and Dave Cook custom fabricated components. The motor is based on the Honda CB550 transverse four, with a radically reworked case so it can be positioned longitudinally instead of transversely. On top of the case work, Dave also built an auxiliary oil tank and oil regulator. The timing assembly is a one-off too, along with the bell housing and clutch assembly, which runs Aermacchi clutch plates. The transmission housing is an old BMW 3-speeder, which Dave managed to fill with a BMW R75 four-speed gear set; the shaft drive is adapted from a Yamaha Virago. It’s a lot of work,..."

i think the main part of the challenge would be figuring out what to do with the oil pump and alternator. i don't know much about these engines because i've never split one before but i think the pump is in the lower rear case?

hey guys just wanted to throw these pics up of a brake pedal i made today. it is my version of a horse shoe! i will be making a heel to toe shifter tomorrow. just a couple more days of fabrication and i will finally be ready to break down the bike for final weld, paint and body...........

hey guys, it's been a couple months since i posted anything on this project. i have been very busy with other customer's bikes but i have been working on it aliitle at a time in my spare moments. the fabrication is all done and parts are being chromed/polished as i type. i took a couple days to do the body work on the tins and today i laid some base down to see where i was going with this. here is what i got. i will post more pics as i progress on the re assembly.............

all right guys here are the final pics of this project. been a long road between working on customer bikes and my personal projects but she's all buttoned up. i finished it this afternoon with the exception of the footpegs and taillight which still haven't come in. check em out............

thank you! this is my first cb550. done other cb's(750,400 ect.) i think i am in love! already looking for another cb550. this thing is super nimble and quick! i am definately surprised...............
