Clutch Friction Discs with ANGLED Slits! Which direction??
« on: January 11, 2013, 05:29:50 pm »
I received my new set of Honda brand friction discs for my 750. Upon checking, the slits in the new discs are NOT perpendicular but rather are angled. Looks like it's possible to install them 'forwards' or 'backwards'. Any insight into installation? Want to have them positioned correctly. Perhaps there is a noticeable front or back?

Position them to sling oil away from centerline, out of the housing while rotating.

I dont care for those. they were grabby and inconsistant. I ended up putting some of the square blocks back in. good luck and let us know if they work okay. I may have just put mine in wrong.

Roach, yeah but they are new Honda parts....... I was surprised to see that angled slit.

JohnN, sounds like the top end of the slit is on the top backside tail end/trailing end of rotation? Does that statement even visually make sense?

Anyone else?

Install them in the basket so when you are looking at them installed the slits go this way \ \ \ \ \ \
I went through this with my clutch. This is per Hondaman.

Ah, pictures :-) then with John's description the rotation would be clockwise?! Did you have new Honda discs too?

Did you look at the angled plate in the fiche Jerry (I sent you the link yesterday my Patron chugging friend) ;D I figured an actual pic is far better than a description. ;)

Remember chain drive clutch spin same direction as engine, gear drive opposite. ;D Normally.Bill

I know my eyes ain't what they used to be but I swear that fiche showed perpendicular slits Mike?! I could NOT find any pictures that showed angled slits. All I pulled up when I searched was angled sluts!  ::) Or angel slits! WTF is with that  8)

Jerry....the #4 fiber plate in the fiche is angled. It is the outside plate that is has the larger tabs than the other fibers (all #3's). I'll give you a break here as you were looking at the pic through tears after that Bronco game.

Yeah Mike I do (now) see that #4 has angled slits on that fiche (whereas discs #3 still have perpendicular slits Mike has Alzheimers  ;) ). On that backside view, which is what we see in that fiche, the top of the slits point to the right. On that side of the disc the tabs edges are perfectly flat. And on the other side which would be the outward side, the tabs edges are slightly rounded. When installed that way the slits (on the side facing outward on the clutch pack) will point the other way meaning the leading edge would be at the bottom thus moving the oil outward bottom to top with the rotation.

Since my #3's discs also have angled slits (unlike that fiche picture) I will install #4 and all #3's with the leading edge forward. Does this sound about right?
