I’m thinking of making a kit so we 650 guys can have an ignition system alternative.

Here is my post of how I got mine to work.

I don't know anything about ignition systems at all. How does this compare to the GM HEI upgrade?

Actually this was the first I’ve heard of the GM HEI mod. After looking it up I see benefits and a downsides compared to the Dyna S.

GM HEI is much cheaper, assuming you have a junk yard you can pick through. It also seems like a fun mod.

With the Dyna you have new parts and there are more people running the Dyna so if you have malfunctions more people can help diagnose. It’s a simpler install. There are no ignition boxes to mount, just a plate and coils and no soldering in diodes and resistors. Also the Dyna coils are designed to fit nicely between the tank.

Both seem like a viable system.

Just bumping this thread in case any new 650 owners are looking for an ignition alternative. Just doing a preseason tuneup and went to check ignition timing (it was perfect) and remembered I had this post.

I like that you're considering this. I'm not currently working with a 650, but it might make a 650 into a 550 swap easier.

Without giving away anything proprietary, what would the kit consist of? I see you had to do some machining.  Would we have to send you our parts?

When I did the 650 swap, Pamco Pete made me a one off ignition,  but he's no longer in business.

Also, I know that the 550 charging system struggles to keep up with the Dyna. Is the 650 more robust?

Not really anything secret about it. I pretty much lay it all out in the linked post above. I would need the plate with Dyna pickups attached and black anodized rotor with the magnet in it. That’s it. What I’d ship back would be a new plate with the Dyna pickups installed and ready to go, the modified rotor to fit on the 650 advance shaft and a spacer for the rotor.

I’ve done a couple already for some forum members and have a few plates already made. I could probably make the Dyna 2000 work too but I would have to get one as a sample first. Doesn’t seem that hard.

At least on my bike the Dyna works awesomely. The 650 charging system is much more robust than the 550. Makes more than enough voltage at idle to fully charge the battery while powering lights. But all my lights (headlight too) is LED so that might be only for my circumstance. I have to check but I think I make like 14 volts at idle.
