Mystery Wires on 1981 CB650C Original Survivor
« on: January 04, 2013, 10:04:55 AM »
Newbie here!

I just picked up an '81 CB650 Custom original survivor.  Great find!  Stored from 1997 to 2007. Only 14,250 original miles.

There are some "mystery wires" coming out of the back of the headlight housing that aren't connected to anything.

First, here's a pic of the bike:

Here's a pic of the mystery wires:

The larger brown sheath has two wires in it, one red and one white.  Then the single white wire is also there.  These are all small gauge, maybe 18 or 20 gauge.  I have not yet opened the headlight housing, but I'll do that next.  Haven't had time to polish any of the chrome yet, but no rust on it anywhere.  I'm just starting to clean her up and check things over.

I removed a small Rifle fairing from the bike, so I'm temporarily missing the front turn signals, but I bought a nice set on eBay that are on the way to me.  That black bracket in the second pic is for the fairing mount.

Everything electrical on the bike works, so I'm wondering if anybody knows what these wires might be for.  Is the headlight housing a popular place to tap off of for accessory wiring?  If so, maybe that's all these were... some wires for an accessory that aren't on the bike anymore.

Any ideas would be welcome.  Thanks.

From the extra bracket and the missing turn signals ther was probably a fairing on it.
Nice looking bike!!!!!!   Time to cut it up and paint it all flat black.  ;D

The headlight housing is where all the wiring connections are. Pull your headlight out of the housing and you'll see what I mean. Also you can trace what the mystery wires are tied into.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

My bet is they powered something that was on the fairing. You can definitely remove them from where they are attached in the bucket at.
And, your CB650c has got to be one of the nicest bikes I have seen. You just don't see that many of them anymore. Nice score! And, that looks like a nice GL1800 you have in the garage. I ride a Wing too when I'm not on the CB  8)

+ 1 on all that.
Fellow wing rider as well.

And yeah, everyone else covered where those wires go.

I love the CB650.  The SC that you've got is one of the best.  Trailing forks (notice the axle is higher than the bottom of the forks, and 'behind', to give a real smooth ride).  + dual disks.  Its a great ride!

Nice score.

Rifle fairing? Pics?

Yes, a Rifle brand fairing designed specifically for this bike was on it when I bought it.  Nice small faring with two storage pockets in it.  It does a really good job of keeping the cold air off of you when riding for its size.

Here's a pic showing the fairing and backrest that were on it when I got it.

Another pic from the rider's view...

You'll notice that the backrest pad is mounted waaaay to high. I'm gonna lower it down quite  bit as I've shown in the first photo. I photoshopped that pic and moved the backrest pad down to where it will end up when I'm done.

That is a NICE bike, man! Beautiful! Keep it original, there are others in worse condition to cut up. ;)
