Oh,  a couple more shiny bits.  This was my experiment with Duplicolor 1615 and clear coat.....baked afterwards.  It seems pretty tough.



In Sweden a lot of people paint the calipers, caliper arms and discs with duplicolor. Maybe not as good as Your VHT, but VHT is impossible to get a hand of due to customs and such. Maybe duplicolor has a European retailer or such. Which exactlly paint did you use ?

I used Duplicolor Engine Enamel ceramic 500 degree.  I have never used it before, but I thought I would try it.  I baked the paint at 200 for one 30 minute cycle.  I will probably bake for a few more cycles.  Here are photos of the paint cans and color codes.

I have the frame and swing arm at the powdercoaters to get a fresh coat of Jet Black 70-80% powder.  This is two steps down from the glossiest color they had.  I'm hoping this color is close to the original shine.  Unfortunatley, I will not get to see it until March because I leave this weekend for a 17 day stretch of working out of town.....The things we do to pay the bills and buy some toys.

I have been going through all the plated hardware and prepping it for zinc plating.  Lots of degreasing and dressing with a wire wheel.  Oh, and by the way, I recommend double gloves if you ever work with ZEP Industrial Purple Cleanser and Degreaser.  It turns out I had pinholes in the thumb and for finger of one off my gloves....not good...this stuff is nasty. 

I was also going to send off my spokes and nipples for replating but I decided against it.  I am going to try two new sets of spokes from partsnmore and see how they are.

I had been debating what to do with the hubs.  Paint with Duplicolor and clear coat,  Powder coat, or polish and clear.  I have decided that I am going to do a hybrid of bead blast finish and polishing just the outer flange of the hubs and clear over everything.  So, the hubs are blasted and I have sanded the area where the spoke holes are with 400 and 800 grit and then a quick buff with emery compound.  It has a nice satin sheen on the buffed area. I think it will look good when cleared with a semi-gloss or satin clear.

oooooooooo nice man, those parts are going to look super when they are done. I dont have the patience to catalog all that stuff and wait for them to be plated. using some new hardware and some old. painted the centerstand hook and spring black so I didnt have to look at the bad zinc, ha.

You can grind or file down the top of the lower right side engine mount which make re-installing your engine so much easier. Sometimes engines tend to catch the top of this lug and get hung up. This modification also reduces the possibility of chipping and/or scratching up the frame.

Oh Darn.  I already dropped it off and it is an hour drive.  Maybe I can take a run up there with my angle grinder this week before they get to it.

I really don't have enough experience with powder to answer with authority.  I am pretty new at it.  It would seem to me that clear powder would work well on the hubs as it requires 450 degrees to cure and car guys use it all the time on aluminum car rims.

I do know that the hubs were cleared with paint from the factory.  There was slight yellowing of this clear before I stripped it off.  There have been a lot of complaints of duplicolor engine enamel clear yellowing on high temp surfaces such as engines.

For me the jury is still out on clear paint (duplicolor) or powder.  If it wasn't the dead of winter I would clear with two part clear that I use on my base/clear paint jobs but I am not allowed to paint that stuff in my garage since it is part of my house. (have to keep the peace with the wife)  I see her point as that stuff gives off some really nasty dangerous fumes.

A question for anyone.  Is it possible to heat up the rear hub to 450 degrees F without the steel brake lining falling out?  One of my concerns is the steel parts moving with the high heat and differential expansion of the metals.  Any chance of warping the brake surface?

It seems that I take perverse pleasure in making old crusty chit look nice.  Maybe I should have been a plastic surgeon.  Ha, not.....  I think the hubs came out OK.  I ended up shooting clear Duplicolor high temp ceramic on the hubs because that's what I had around.  The brake plate is polished but not cleared.

I finally got my forks apart and just got done painting the lowers. i am waiting on some new copper crush washers for the allen bolts in the bottom of the fork, its an 8mm bolt and is not in any of the fiches online. its bolted to a smaller tube inside of the fork lower. the copper washer needs to be replaced and the bolt needs medium level loctite on it and it needs to be tightened to 14ft lbs. just in case you were rebuilding your forks!

tomorrow I can bake the forks, and I will trying to get to my local shop to get the front and rear wheels trued up

I have my forks apart and I know what bolts and washers you are talking about.  I figured I would anneal the washers I have and try to re-use.  I have been kind of on the lookout for fork tubes as someone must have stuck mine in a vice to straighten at some point.  they left some marks on the surface where the sliders slide on the lower part of the tubes.  Those early tubes are harder to source than the newer ones.

I think I may have one set of tubes for a k1 left. The tops may be crusty though. I will take a look.

i checked under the K2 models (341s) we are supposed to have 300s. they have 4 sets of 341s in stock, and my card is burning a hole through my pocket. I KNOW I am going to have to address my pipes because I can't have everything new and shiny and nasty headers, and I'm not wrapping them. I bet i will cave in and spend it, just not now. it would serve me no purpose ;)

I will let you know.  I will not see them until the end of the month because that darn work thing.  I will take dial caliper measurements to check the diameter compared to stock.

I think they are more so universal fit. here's what I can tell you. I bought new DID rims, 19" front and 18" rear. then I bought the spoke set from cb750supply.com I think it was $40. everything has fit and worked fine so far!
