Topic: Ticking under acceleration? Just a valve adjustment (i hope)??

as some of you know I rebuilt my cb750k4 last summer. I installed brand new tappet screws and did the initial valve adjustment. After putting 2000 miles on the bike I haven't done a follow up valve adjustment yet. I got to take it out today for a bit and I'm getting a loud ticking under acceleration from the valve train. The gap has just grown pretty big right? If I recall I may have set it to the larger side when I did it initially anyways. I'd like to hear other things it COULD be just so I can keep it in mind. Would timing or anything else be a factor?

I'm concerned about my cam chain tensioner becausse I did not replace the rubber wheels and they were pretty hard and used up. I plan on taking this engine back out and boring it out in the next year or two but I guess I'm looking for some reassurance that the cam chain tensioner will be ok. Is there anyway to tell from the outside if it's failing?

It also may be worth noting that this is with gas that has been sitting in the bike for 2 months.

I usually check for exhaust leaks for ticking on acceleration. Exhaust leaks can sound very metallic.

That could very well be it since I had to drill and tap out half of my exhaust bolts and I've got them lubed up and they don't have lock washers or anything they like to come loose. I'll take a look at that! Would be nice if that's it.....

My 72' 750 makes that same ticking noise , especially when it's warmer out , I've searched around and have seen verying  replays as to why , " it's normal , all Hodas make that noise ,Rusty "
But , would like to see what other people have to say on this subject ,seams the leaky headers-are at the top of the list though , mine are tight as can be w/ new gaskets.

Just to keep in the back of your mind, if it starts clattering under acceleration as if someone has thrown a handful of pennies in the engine it is most likely detonating/pinging.  It will be worse when it is hot or if the fuel is getting old or of low quality.  It may be simply that you are lugging the engine too much, these things love to rev.  It could also be your timing too far advanced or your fuel mixture is too lean.  Also a less common cause is an excess build up of carbon in the combustion chamber.  Just remember that if it is detonating it can cause massive damage inside the engine, from wearing out the big and little ends to burning holes in the pistons.  To the untrained ear it can sound like a tappetey engine, so just be careful.

Doh. One of my exhaust mounting bolts is missing, must've loosened up and fell off.     I'm glad that's all it was though. Now I know what an exhaust leak sounds like, and now I know to regularly tighten up my less than ideal exhaust bolts
