CB750 clutch lifter rant

I am a 750 owner and I broke my clutch lifter this AM.  Splines were lined up correctly, but I did not watch where the springs fit under the lifter and it bound up there.  Just one turn from being finished and then cracking noise!  Lucky for me I have a parts bike for the part.  Will get part later, now I decided a beer would be better.   

I know I am not the first or the last to do it, so I have joined that not so exclusive club.

Could you reference the page numbers for me, I can't find any comments in Mark's book re: the springs.

As to breakage, I must be a lucky guy. I am very keen and have posted pictures in many threads about the right way to line up the splines. But I've never had a problem once that is done. Use one bolt to pull the pressure plate splines into the hub, then wing them all down, no breakage, no further care.

Always interested in learning.

MCRider,  I have read your posts concerning this and the splines are as you say they should be.  I was careless and I believe the spring was not centered on the bolt.  I could feel the other bolts bottom, but I felt I was no where close to reaching for my torque wrench.

MCRider,  I do want to say your posts are very helpful. 

Did I understand you that you put the lifter on with one bolt?  I believe you mean without the spring to check if everything is lined up?

Like you,  I am always looking to learn

I just thread one in, with the springs, by hand until I can use it as a handle to pull the pressure plate into the hub. (no picture). Then tighten the one 180° out, alternating with the first one. These two will draw the plate down quickly and smoothly.

Then I do the other 2, and finish off with the torques wrench.


What I'm not familiar with and hence maybe lucky, is needing to give any attention to aligning the springs. Seems they self align.  Or maybe I do it sort of intuitively.

They pretty much will self align UNLESS one sits on that outside edge/tit on the lifter. If you don't catch this you are hosed.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Nice idea.  I've broken mine before but your method will ensure even distribution among the four corners while only having to make sure that two bolts are evenly tightened.

Fact is one should do it as many say, all 4 in cross rotation.

My point being if everything is lined up, splines (and evidently springs too), the lifter plate is not in jeopardy nearly as much as some might think.

Thank you, MCRider and Jerry Rxman Griffin.  The pictures and the words helped alot.  Easy to do when it is done right.  I am still embarassed, because I machine and build prototypes in my job and I should have have caught that.

Glad it's working out Steve.

I think the question here would be - Who has NOT done this?! It's a learning experience and I am experienced  ;)
