Need Help: Adapting Pods
« on: July 13, 2006, 10:04:38 PM »
Guys:

It turns out that K&N doesn't have pods that work with my 1980 CB650C.  They have the ones for 81/82 mislabeled.

The universal ones don't appear to have a long enough "throat" to clear the choke arm.

The 46mm diameter has a 5/8" long throat, and I need about an inch for clearance.

What have you geniuses done to adapt pods in situations like this?

Thanks.

Think I posted that once.   I made some aluminum sleeves to set the middle 2 out to clear the arm.
Never was happy with it so sold the filters and am leaving stock box on with k&n filter in it.

i had to take the rubber boot nearest the choke arm and turn it diagonal on the metal intake housing where it actually came back off the carb at about a 30 degree angle.  this gave just enough clearance for the choke arm to move and for the boot to still seal good.  try it.   you'll never see that spot on a inline 4 anyway.

Hi Terry:

Was it your adapter arrangement you were unhappy with, or was it just too difficult to tune the pods?

Thanks,

Zeke

Hey JD:

So the pods that you were using had an angle on it?

Were you able to get the bike dialed in with the pods?

Thanks,

Todd

Thanks for posting this. Just bumping it.  I was thinking about pods for my '80 650c...

I had to make universal pods fit on '79 CB650 carbs since the PO had chucked the air box.  I cut down the plastic choke lever so that it fits between the 2 center pods and cut in a new slot for the cable.  We'll see how long it lasts.  If it breaks, I figure I could make a slim lever out of aluminum.

I made short alum tubes to clamp on 2&3 carbs and then put filters on them.   Never had trouble with jetting.
