powdercoating brake discs
« on: January 05, 2013, 06:33:39 AM »
Hello all.
I would like to paint the inner part of my brake discs (CB750). Given that I am going to bring some parts to the powdercoater, I wonder if I could include the brake discs, but I'm afraid that they could distorto due to the powdercoating oven temperature. Is the temperature safe for these discs? Thank you.

When my guy masked off the braking surface, he left the circumferential edge. It got coated for a nice effect.

I had been considering this!  Looks like from the one picture you went ahead and coated the pin/bolt heads around the inner ring as opposed to masking them off as well.  I was looking at the stock look and the masking effort would be substantial unless you forgot about the bolt heads.

Hmm, it never even occurred to me. The powdercoater did it that way and I didn't offer an opinion.
I think he taped it, then ran a razor blade around the easiest border.

That's some crazy drilling, MC.  I really like the coating on the edges.

Tip from another pro. (not this guy, just useful information) Because of the inconsistency, of powder coat. If the inside of the disk rim (look below) is powder coated. When its bolted to the wheel, it might not be parallel with the wheel. One guy was telling me that when he was test driving it, when braking it would be inconsistent, it would shutter to a stop, not wile riding, just braking. Took the wheel off left the disks on, and brought it to his balancing station, spun the wheel and the disk wobbled. Not because of improper balance, or lose bolts but because of powder added thickness in between the rear of the disk and the hub. ".003" of and inch of powder  coat thickness transferred to .03 or so of wobble on the outer disk edge.
Keep riding, it looks good, just wanted to share my knowledge.

Also, don't powder-coat the inside of the center hole, as it may not allow the disc to fit on the wheel hub.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Geez Lucky no one is THAT bad  ;) Rich is correct, the 'edge' not the surface. Guess he thought that'd be cool looking?
