Engine Swap
« on: January 06, 2013, 12:28:47 PM »
I am attempting to bring a '76 750A back to life. The bike has 4,000 miles on the clock and I was told that it had been in storage for 30 years. Not much wear on anything, original tires, original gas in the tank (nice!) and the engine was frozen. I figured that I could sort that out, but what a mess! The pistons in cylinders 1 and 4 are all the way down, and cylinder 1 is badly rusted with a 2" deep pile of rust flakes and crud in it. I am trying to decide whether to either attempt to repair it, part it out, or buy a different engine.

Will a standard 750 engine fit the frame? I would welcome your thoughts on this project. Thanks!

Can you - or have you tried to pull the cylinder?  You can replace the cylinder/pistons without removing the engine . . . .

I believe that a standard 750 can be fitted - maybe someone else will chime in . . . .

I haven't been able to get the cylinders loose yet. The cylinder assembly seems to be pretty well stuck. I have soaked the bores for several weeks with oil. Would you suggest that I bang on the pistons with a chunk of wood? I wouldn't be too concerned about damaging the pistons or cylinders, just don't want to damage the con rods.

Take the advise of Prospect in that thread and remove the bottom end and disconnect the rods so that you don't do any damage to the bearings.
A five speed motor MIGHT fit but the earlier K model chain alignment might be out a bit, the later F model should be ok.
