Trimming/Cutting/Modifying Fenders
« on: July 14, 2006, 08:55:52 AM »
I am planning on trying to make my scoot look a little different.  I purchased a used front and rear fender for the project, my orininal fenders are cherry and I want to be able to put the bike back to stock from time to time.  Anyway, I plan on cutting my front fender short at the front and rear and also, I plan on cutting the rear fender just an inch or two above the rear tail light bracket for a "bobbed" look.  I may have them rechromed, but I am leaning on painted.  My question is, how can I make them look clean because they have a rolled lip on the edges?  By the way, it is a '72 CB750.

Thanks,
Sparty

You can't really re-create the rolled edge easily, but a Dremmel works great for cutting the fenders.  That's what I used to cut the front fender on my 550, and it came out very clean.  If you're planning on painting them, that makes it even easier because you don't have to worry about protecting the cut edge from rust.

Do you have a pic of your front fender?

You can cut off the front and back of the fender (rolled edges). Cut off however much you want to take off and then weld the rolled edge, front and back, back to the fender. It takes low heat on a welder because it can melt through the metal. It takes a little body work (putty) to fill any imperfections. I did this to my front fender and I am getting ready to paint it.

dont have a closeup, but heres how my front fender looked before i took it off, and the rear in two different stages. i just cut and smoothed out the edge. there is no roll on it. if you get the line straight and smooth it looks good without it.

Hehe.. i was going to ask how you then re-secured your speedo cable after cutting the rear of the front fender (w/plastic speedo cable route) but then noticed...

you ain't got a speedo.

anyone trimmed the back of the front fender have any ideas on how to re-secure the speedo cable?

you can buy mild steel round stock and weld it around the edges of your fenders to acheive the rolled edge look.

On the rear fender, you can shorten it from the inside - don't cut the exposed end with the rolled edge - cut the end under the seat.

For the fender, you can always drill a hole and re-position the plastic holder for the speedo cable.
