New Krugger CB450 build with inverted head
« on: January 08, 2013, 10:58:20 AM »
Dime City Cycles linked this on their FaceBook page -- Not sure if it's a new concept, but it's a beautiful build.  He flipped the intake/exhaust sides.

I believe I have seen a English twin with the heads turned 180 degrees.  Nice looking bike, too.

I was curious on how that would function.  Anyone care to elaborate on what the pitfalls of this are?  I admit, it looks cool but I have no knowledge on the mechanical theory or functionality of anything :P

the hottest part of a four stroke engine is the exhaust valve / exhaust port  . the only way to keep that area cool enough [ particularly in an air cooled engine ] is to stick it where the air can get to it properly i.e. the front of the engine . for racing there have been a couple of people who have tried to reverse the head [ it has a couple of very tempting advantages , better inlet angle and a straighter exhaust ] suter built one for the foggy petronas which they quickly abandoned and the 2012 honda moto3 bike has one although i doubt this years will . even HD turned the rear head around on the flat trackers to keep them in one bit .

A nice looking bike indeed !  I would think that the head has been turned purely for cosmetic purposes. It wouldn't be very practical to run with the open carb mouths ready to suck in all manner of debris. Making any sort of filter is going to impede the front end.
Probably not that difficult to do, the cams would have to be re ground the "wrong" way as they would now be running backward, but apart from that, fairly straightforward.

I was hoping for a performance report at the end of the project, but we seem to have lost brother.
