Fuses...What size SFE?
« on: July 29, 2013, 09:49:34 AM »
I'm guessing it's either 7 1/2, 9, or 14.  Can anyone out there make this a short thread?  These seam to be the hardest damn fuses to get a hold of.

And please don't tell me to upgrade to blade type;  That's all well and good on my own ride, but I'd like to have some glass fuses handy for when I work on other bikes.

Got it!...14.  Almost went blind squinting to see the number on this corroded fuse.  Makes sense SFE 14 = 14A.

use steel wool or sandpaper to clean corrosion, to see it better and make your bike happier

SFE Fuses are fast acting fuses.  You don't want these in this bike.  If anything you want a slow blow fuse.  Even that will blow faster than anything can be damaged in the bike's electricals.  Besides that, 15A is the standard main fuse in the SOHC4.

I started a thread about fuses a while ago, the stock fuse is 25mm long but try and find one, all these days are either 20 too short or 30 too long. I was advised to go blade but I don't want to. I'm gonna have to pull the fuse clips out of the rubber thing and make a new one at 30mm is all I can think of. As for slo blow, I was a Honda mech back in the 70s and only ever saw fast blow in these.

I'm assuming you are looking for 1/4" x 1", 6.3mm x 25.4mm fuses.  Some later model SOHC4s used the longer and more common 1/4 x 1 1/4 fuses.  The later ARE easier to find, but don't fit properly into the older fuse clips and will lead to eventual problems.

Slo blo fuses are better suited to inductive loads as they have a short time delay (msecs.) before over current actually melts them.  Fast blow fuses have a hair trigger, ostensibly to protect sensitive silicon junctions from meltdown.  Wiring will take longer to damage from over current than either fuse type's melting mechanism.

Has Honda discontinued their fuse offerings?

I should add I'm an electronic tech and know the differences between slo blo and fast acting, etc.  I have converted all of my bikes to blade fuses, but I'm working on a 750 for someone that has been rigged with the wrong (physically) sized fuses.  Fortunately one fuse was the right size (SFE 14).  Even though the required circuit amperages are 5,7 & 15, the length is determined by the amperage rating: 5/8 (4 amp). 3/4" (6 amp), 7/8" (7.5 amp), 1" (9 amp), 1 1/16" (14 amp), 1 1/4" (20 amp), 1 7/16" (30 amp).  It just wasn't apparent at first which fuse type to get.  And, honestly, I was at work away from the bike so I thought I would just ask the forum to get a quick definite answer so I could hit the store on the way home.  Got home before anyone could answer and figured it out.

Thanks everyone and I will be using the fast acting SFE 14 fuse for main, SFE 7.5 and 9 for headlight and tail which I believe are the closest to correct original type.
