I think on the 550, the later models got the "EPA" Lean-burn carbs which were harder to adjust/modify and were arguably underjetted.

I have examples of all three years of Cb550F;  F0, F1, and F2. There are many very small changes.  All three have the same frame, engine, exhaust and carburetors. (Well, there was a rolling change to the rocker cover inside).  The jetting is exactly the same on all three bikes.  The differences are largely color related to; seat, tank, side covers, instrument faces.  Probably, the biggest difference in the F2 over previous models is the front end.  Different forks, no gaiters, upper fork covers, front fender, all changed for the F2 and may also be found on the 77-78 K models.

GG's lean burn carbs were only on the 77-78 k model 550s.  These carbs worked well with the stock exhaust and air filters.  They require a little more skill to adapt to bike alterations.

It's amazing how "different" can be both blessing or curse depending on viewpoint.
