Suggestions on a Fuel Filter?
« on: January 11, 2013, 10:37:20 pm »
Getting ready to put my carbs back on my CB400f and was thinking of adding a little fuel filter between the gas tank and the carbs.

Is it necessary? and recommendations?

Thanks

There should be one in or above the fuel tap which is all that is needed, as long as it is in good condition.

+1. I had nothing but trouble with "extra" fuel filters. They worsen reliability instead of improving. It's logic.

Just check to make sure that the filter sock is still actually there.

My K8 tank had no sock on the tap.  Probably why the PO parked it for constantly leaking carbs.  The tank had all sorts of sediment in it.  I got the majority of it out.  One of these has kept the rest from fouling my carbs.

Two things, when you say there should be one on the petcock, how much of one? Mine (aftermArket) has a bit of screening is this what you mean? Also the quick easy ones from advance that are just from their off the rack stuff koolaided my gas on my other bike. Draining the carbs the gas came out dyed and smelling sweet. So beware!

I have been running those for years on my 750 and no problems at all. The trick is to make sure you have a good pitch on the fuel line so you don't have air trapping in the filter or the line. That little sock in the tank is useless except for large rust flakes. My opinion agree or disagree it is fine with me.

I use Tygon fuel line you can get from places that fix snowblowers and tractors. It is very flexible and self clamping.

Rich,

If you're referring to your bike and IT'S stock petcock, yes it should/can have one and they are available. It is a fine mesh and should filter damn near anything. Not sure what Bobby's looked like??

Well remember I got the '77/'78 petcock and I do NOT remember seeing this high screen stack on the replacement petcock I got with the new tank, was just wondering if you can still get just that screen stack and add it to the stock '77/'78 petcock.

Seems like the more filtration the better but I could imagine maybe the filter reducing throughput somewhat maybe at full throttle?  Also you have the extra filter kinda hanging there somewhere taking away from the stock look.

If there are reliable, quality filter screens for the top of the petcock and that pretty much does the trick, seems like the way to go IMHO.

That's the best. In combination with a fuel line cut to it's original length there's no risk of kinking or airbubbles and you have nothing to worry about. It has been on mine since 1976 and still does what it is supposed to do. Every 5 years I have a look at it. Handle with care though.

I use the same type of bronze filter shown in the picture. The way I install it is to cut a small piece of Tygon line and push it onto the bottom outlet. You spit on the end a push it onto the carb fuel inlet. The filter sits between carb one and two and is almost invisible.

I attach a line to the fuel filter inlet and lower the tank. I then run the line smoothly to the petcock clip it spit on the end and push it on. I like Tygon since it self clamps.
You can substitute spring water if spit offends you. In the garage I am always fresh out of spring water.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
